Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

Detective Miller silenced the buzzing phone with a sharp swipe of her thumb, her eyes darting quickly around the opulent living room.

“Mr. Thornton, I need you to sit down with your daughter right now,” Miller instructed, her voice carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument.

David slowly lowered himself onto the edge of the velvet sofa, still holding Lily close while the eight-year-old clutched his lapels.

“What is it, Detective?” David asked, his voice cracking with exhaustion and fear. “Has something else happened at the house?”

“Our cyber crimes unit just cracked the cloud storage drive linked to Mrs. Thornton’s personal tablet,” Miller said, keeping her gaze fixed on David.

Elena stopped struggling entirely, her body slumping forward against the police officer as the color drained completely from her face.

“You didn't have a warrant for that,” Elena muttered, sounding defeated for the first time since the police officers crossed their threshold.

“When child endangerment involves immediate physical jeopardy, a digital emergency warrant takes effect instantly, Mrs. Thornton,” Miller replied coldly.

Miller turned her phone around, pressing play on a high-definition video file and placing the screen flat on the coffee table before David.

The glowing display showed a live-feed angle from inside Lily’s bedroom, recorded just three nights prior while the house was supposed to be asleep.

On the screen, Elena stood over Lily’s bed, her expression twisted into a cruel mask of absolute coldness as she whispered threats to the sleeping child.

Lily whimpered softly on the sofa, burying her face into her father’s chest once more to block out the horrifying digital memory.

“There is more,” Miller continued, switching to a digital document file that opened automatically on the display. “The ledger Ms. Vance mentioned.”

David leaned forward, reading the glowing text on the screen with mounting horror as his wife’s meticulous handwriting detailed her sadistic actions.

Every entry listed dates, specific punishments, and cruel psychological evaluations of an eight-year-old child who had done nothing to deserve such torment.

“She kept a score,” David whispered, his hands trembling so violently that he could barely hold his daughter steady on his lap.

“She viewed the child as a possession that required breaking,” Miller stated bluntly, closing her briefcase with a sharp snap.

The two uniformed officers holding Elena exchanged grim expressions, quietly leading the unresisting woman toward the front entrance to await the transport vehicle.

“You can’t prove any of that was intentional,” Elena hissed over her shoulder as she was pulled across the threshold into the night air.

David didn't look up as the front door clicked shut behind his departing wife, his entire world having completely collapsed in less than an hour.

Clara quietly stepped forward from the piano, holding a glass of water out toward David with a deeply sympathetic expression.

David reached out to take the glass, but as his fingers brushed Clara’s hand, his phone lit up with a text message from an unknown number.
