Chapter 9 - The Perimeter Breach

Clara froze, her hand hovering just inches from the rusted iron rung. The red laser dot drifted slowly upward, tracing the line of her spine before resting squarely on the back of her emerald satin blouse. From the darkness of the tunnel entrance behind them, the heavy whine of the cutting torch abruptly ceased.
"Checkmate, Clara," Julian’s voice echoed down the concrete tube, cold, flat, and entirely devoid of human emotion.
Maya paused halfway up the ladder, looking down with grim determination. She pulled the encrypted tablet from her scrub pocket and tapped the screen twice. A sharp, high-pitched electronic signal began to emit from the device, bouncing off the brick walls.
"Julian, you're surrounded," Maya called out into the tunnel, her voice echoing clearly. "The federal oversight team downloaded the complete ledger sync thirty seconds ago. Your offshore accounts have already been frozen by the SEC. Shooting us won't stop the investigation; it will only guarantee you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary."
A harsh, humorless laugh echoed from the darkness. "You think a digital file protects you out here in the woods, Maya? Nobody knows where this property line ends. By the time federal marshals get through the court order queue, this entire estate will have changed ownership through corporate bankruptcy."
A heavy metallic crash rang out as the iron door finally gave way, followed by rapid, heavy footsteps charging down the tunnel toward them.
"Clara, climb! Now!" Maya screamed, reaching down and grabbing Clara by the collar, hauling her upward with a surge of adrenaline.
Clara scrambled up the rungs of the ladder, her shoes slipping twice against the slick iron before she lunged out through the open manhole into the bright morning sunlight. She tumbled hard onto the wooden floor of the gardener's shed, scraping her palms against the rough boards. Maya tumbled out right behind her, slamming the iron grate shut and dropping a heavy locking bar across the top just as a gunshot cracked from deep within the shaft, the bullet pinging harmlessly off the underside of the metal plate.

They scrambled out through the wooden double doors of the shed into the crisp air of the Maple Ridge estate. The open driveway stretched out before them, but blocking the exit gate was a black SUV with tinted windows, its engine idling smoothly. The driver's side door swung open, and a tall man in a dark suit stepped out, holding a silver briefcase in one hand.
