Chapter 2 - The Stolen Ledger

Clara did not leave the house. Instead, she retreated into the stifling quiet of the downstairs guest study, slamming the heavy mahogany door behind her with a dull thud. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she pressed her back against the wood, listening to the muffled murmurs echoing from the kitchen down the hall. Julian’s deep, authoritative baritone rumbled, followed by the soft, soothing tones of Maya speaking to their mother. Clara knew Julian suspected her motives, but he had no idea about the actual contents of the heavy metal lockbox hidden beneath the loose floorboards of the upstairs linen closet.
That lockbox contained their late father’s private financial ledger—a ledger that detailed decades of hidden assets, questionable offshore accounts, and, most importantly, a sudden amendment to the family trust made just three weeks before their father’s sudden stroke. According to that document, the vast majority of the estate was not going to be split evenly between Julian and Clara. Instead, an unfamiliar name appeared as the primary beneficiary of the multi-million-dollar trust, backed by a signature that looked remarkably unsteady.
Clara crossed the study toward the mahogany desk, sliding open the top drawer to retrieve her car keys. She needed to get back to her apartment across town before Julian decided to search her belongings. Yet, as her fingers brushed against the felt lining of the drawer, she noticed something profoundly wrong. The spare set of house keys she always kept tucked inside the leather organizer was completely gone. Someone had not only entered her private workspace while she was upstairs with Elena, but they had methodically searched it.
The heavy silence of the house was suddenly broken by the distinct, metallic click of a deadbolt turning from the outside. Panic spiked hot and sharp in Clara’s chest. She rushed to the tall, double-paned window overlooking the driveway. Through the sheer white curtains, she watched in horror as Julian’s sleek sedan backed smoothly out of the garage, the brake lights flashing red against the overcast morning sky. He was leaving, but Maya was still inside with Elena.
Clara crept cautiously out of the study, her rubber-soled flats making zero sound on the hardwood hallway floor. The kitchen was empty, the marble island wiped clean, but the wooden pestle was gone. From the upstairs landing, a faint, rhythmic creaking sound drifted down, followed by a low murmur of conversation that made Clara’s blood run cold. She quietly mounted the first three steps, peering up into the dimly lit hallway. Maya stood directly outside the master bedroom, holding a ringing smartphone to her ear, speaking in hushed, urgent tones to someone on the other end.

"Yes, the ledger is still in the attic crawlspace," Maya whispered into the phone, her posture tense. "He suspects nothing, but Clara is lingering. We need to move the timeline up before Julian gets back from his meeting."
