Chapter 13 - The Crimson Override

The sharp, repeating beep of the tablet cut through the quiet relief settling over the front porch. Maya snatched the device off her lap, her eyes scanning the scrolling crimson text with mounting disbelief. The green sync status had vanished, replaced by an ominous, flashing system error that indicated the primary server cluster at the federal oversight office had just experienced a complete, unauthorized data wipe.

"What is it?" Clara asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach all over again. "Did Julian's backup team lock us out?"

"No," Maya whispered, her fingers flying across the virtual keyboard in a desperate attempt to restore the connection. "It’s not Julian’s team. The wipe originated from an internal override authorization code... registered under your father’s primary administrative profile."

Elena’s serene expression vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sharp, genuine panic. "That's impossible. Thomas died six months ago. His administrative credentials were encrypted and archived in the vault."

"Vault credentials can be cloned if someone had access to his biometric security ring," Maya said, standing up abruptly and looking toward the main house. "The ring wasn't in the safe upstairs. Julian wasn't just hiding financial documents; he was using your father’s digital identity to set up a secondary offshore shell company that activates the moment the primary accounts are frozen."

A low, mechanical hum vibrated through the ground beneath their feet. From inside the main house, the sound of heavy server fans whirring to life echoed through the open front doorway. The smart-home system panels on the exterior walls flashed red, locking all the exterior doors automatically with a heavy, synchronized thud.

"They've initiated the asset dispersal protocol," Maya said, her voice tight with urgency as she tried the front door handle. It wouldn't budge; the deadbolts had engaged automatically from the internal mainframe. "The entire estate has been placed into corporate receivership by an automated legal entity that just triggered outside our jurisdiction."

Clara stared at the glowing smart-home panel by the front door, watching helplessly as the ownership name on the digital display updated in real-time. The Vance family estate no longer belonged to Clara, Elena, or even Julian. The primary beneficiary field had just shifted to an unfamiliar, international conglomerate registered in the Cayman Islands.
