Chapter 8 - The Tunnel Chase

"Clara! Maya! You can't outrun this!" Julian’s voice bounced off the brick walls of the sub-basement, amplified by the confined space into a terrifying, distorted roar.

Maya pushed Clara hard through the open iron doorway, following closely behind and slamming the heavy slab shut. She spun the combination dial blindly and flipped a secondary manual locking lever just as a heavy blow slammed against the exterior of the door. The iron shuddered under the impact, the old rivets groaning in protest, but the industrial lock held firm against Julian’s brute force.

"Keep moving!" Maya shouted, breaking into a rapid jog down the dimly lit maintenance tunnel.

Clara followed, her designer flats slapping against the damp concrete floor, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The tunnel stretched on for what felt like miles, lined with old copper water pipes and thick electrical conduits that buzzed with a low, dangerous frequency. Every shadow cast by the flickering yellow work lights seemed to take on a menacing shape. She couldn't wrap her head around the transformation in her brother. Julian had always been the rational, protective older sibling who helped her through college and comforted her when their father passed away. The idea that he was capable of poisoning their mother and hunting them down with a firearm felt like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.

"How much further to the exit?" Clara called out over the echoing sound of their footsteps.

"About fifty yards!" Maya yelled back without slowing down. "There's an emergency ladder leading up to the gardener's shed near the eastern perimeter fence. Once we breach the surface, we have to get to the main highway before Julian's private security detail cuts off the access road."

Suddenly, a loud, metallic grinding noise echoed from behind the sealed iron door they had just left. Julian wasn't just trying to break the lock anymore; he was using an industrial cutting torch. A bright white spark illuminated the cracks around the door frame, followed by the sickening smell of burning steel.

"He's cutting through the hinges!" Maya cursed under her breath, increasing her pace to a full sprint.

They reached the base of a vertical ladder attached to a circular manhole shaft covered by a heavy iron grate. Faint daylight filtered down from above, cutting through the damp gloom of the tunnel. Maya grabbed the rusted rungs, scrambling upward with surprising agility, and pushed hard against the grate. It swung open, letting in a rush of fresh morning air. But as Clara reached up to grab the bottom rung, a bright red laser dot flickered across the concrete floor right between her feet.
