Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Visitor

The sharp chime of the doorbell echoed through the silent, tense house, freezing all three women in their tracks. Clara looked from Maya to her mother, her mind racing through the rapidly closing escape routes. If Julian was already back at the front entrance, he had lied about his destination to throw her off balance. He had never left the property; he had simply circled the block to test her reaction and confirm whether she had found the hidden cache.
"Go," Elena urged, her voice dropping to an urgent whisper as she gestured toward the service elevator. "Take the lift down to the sub-basement. There is an old maintenance tunnel that leads out to the gardener's shed by the eastern fence line. Do not let Julian catch you with the evidence."
"I am not running away from my own brother," Clara hissed back, stepping defiantly down the stairs. "It is time we faced him out in the open. Let him explain why he has been holding our mother hostage in her own home."
Maya moved with startling speed, blocking the staircase before Clara could descend further. "You don't understand the level of danger you are walking into, Ms. Vance. Julian is not just protecting a corporate portfolio. The people he partnered with to cover up the embezzlement are professional fixers. If they realize you know about the drive, they won't hesitate to make this look like a tragic domestic accident."
The front door downstairs rattled loudly, followed by the heavy thud of a shoulder hitting the wood. Julian was no longer bothering to wait for someone to answer. The deadbolt splintered with a sharp crack, and heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood foyer floor.
"Clara! I know you are still in this house!" Julian’s voice boomed up the stairwell, cold and devoid of any familial warmth. "Come down here right now and hand over the keys to the study, or I swear I will have you committed before the sun goes down."
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at the open service elevator shaft, then back toward the main hallway where Julian’s shadow was beginning to stretch up the lower steps. Maya grabbed Clara’s arm with surprising strength, pulling her backward into the narrow utility space just as the heavy footsteps reached the landing.

Through the narrow crack in the utility door, Clara watched as Julian stepped into the hallway. In his right hand, he wasn't holding the wooden pestle anymore; he was holding a sleek, black revolver that caught the dim hallway light with a menacing gleam.
