Chapter 14 - The Final Asset Transfer

The digital display on the smart-home panel flickered once, stabilizing into a crisp corporate logo that none of them recognized. The estate on Maple Ridge Lane, along with every commercial asset and trust fund bearing the Vance family name, had officially been transferred to an anonymous holding corporation. The police cruisers parked in the driveway suddenly cut their engines, their emergency lights flashing silently as the responding officers received automated dispatch updates on their vehicle terminals.
The lead trooper stepped out of his cruiser, looking visibly confused as he checked his radio and walked back toward the porch. "Ms. Vance, we just received an automated stay of proceedings from the federal district court. The warrant has been temporarily suspended pending a jurisdictional review by the corporate receivership board."
Julian leaned back inside the open rear door of the first police cruiser, a slow, triumphant smirk spreading across his face despite the steel cuffs around his wrists. "You didn't really think a local task force could outmaneuver an international trust, did you, Clara? Dad set up that contingency years ago to protect the firm from government overreach. I just executed the paperwork."
Clara felt a wave of cold fury wash over her. She marched right past the trooper and stopped just inches from the cruiser window, staring down her brother. "You didn't protect the firm, Julian. You sold out our family name to save your own skin."
"I saved our legacy," Julian snapped back, his voice dripping with venom. "And now, without the property rights or the access codes, you and Mom have legally forfeited your residency on this estate."
Before Clara could reply, Maya stepped up beside her, holding her phone up to her ear with a calm, deliberate expression. She listened for a few seconds, nodded once, and ended the call. Maya looked at Julian, then at the smart-home panel on the wall, and finally at Elena.
"Your brother is right about the corporate receivership," Maya said clearly, loud enough for the troopers to hear. "However, he overlooked one crucial detail in the original corporate charter drafted in nineteen-ninety-two."
Julian’s smirk faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"
"Section four, paragraph B," Maya replied smoothly, stepping toward the smart-home panel and pressing her thumb against the biometric scanner embedded in the glass frame. "The charter states that in the event of an automated corporate receivership trigger, absolute ownership reverts automatically to the living spouse... unless the spouse signs a formal disinheritance waiver."

The panel flashed green once, twice, and then displayed a bright, permanent authorization checkmark.
