Chapter 6 - The Barrel of Truth

The dark metal of the firearm gleamed ominously in Julian’s hand as he scanned the empty hallway. His breathing was heavy, deliberate, and entirely calm—the breathing of a man who had crossed a psychological Rubicon and could never turn back. Clara pressed her hand hard over her mouth to stifle the terrified gasp threatening to escape her throat. Maya stood directly beside her in the cramped utility shaft, holding a small, encrypted data tablet that blinked with a steady green light.
"I know you are hiding up here, Clara," Julian called out, his voice echoing smoothly against the plaster walls. "You always were too curious for your own good. Dad noticed it too, which is why he tried to cut you out of the primary distribution. He knew you would dig until you found the offshore shell companies."
Clara’s eyes widened in disbelief. She turned her head slightly to look at Maya, silently demanding answers. Maya shook her head, tapping the screen of the tablet to reveal a series of financial documents showing Julian’s signature alongside corporate entities registered in the Cayman Islands.
"Dad didn't cut me out," Clara whispered fiercely, her voice barely audible over the hum of the old elevator mechanism. "He trusted me more than anyone. That’s why he left the real audit in the vault."
"The vault was emptied months ago," Julian continued, taking two slow steps closer to the utility panel hiding them. "Maya, if you are helping her in there, remember the arrangement. Your sister's medical debts are cleared the moment this house transfers to my sole ownership."
Maya didn't flinch, but her jaw tightened visibly. She pressed a small button on the side of the tablet, and a soft, electronic chime rang out from the opposite end of the hallway, near the guest bedroom. Julian spun around instantly, raising the revolver toward the decoy noise with military precision.
"Now!" Maya hissed, shoving the service elevator button.

The cage dropped downward with a sudden, sickening jolt, plunging them into the dark, damp air of the sub-basement. Clara gripped the rusted iron bars as the rushing wind whipped her blonde ponytail across her face. Above them, a furious shout echoed down the shaft, followed by the deafening crack of a gunshot that ricocheted off the concrete walls.
