Chapter 12 - The Handcuffs Click

The sharp, metallic click of steel handcuffs snapping around Julian’s wrists echoed across the gravel driveway like a gunshot. Julian struggled against the restraint for a brief moment before regaining his composure, his face twisting into a mask of bitter resentment. "You are making a catastrophic mistake," he snarled, glaring at Maya as the troopers forced him toward the back of the cruiser. "Every document you think you have was legally signed and notarized by the board of directors. You won't hold me for twenty-four hours."

The corporate fixer watched the arrest unfold with detached indifference, sliding his hands smoothly into his trouser pockets. He didn't make a move to intervene, recognizing instantly that the political optics had shifted beyond salvage. With a subtle nod to his subordinates, he turned and climbed back into the black SUV, which reversed smoothly down the driveway and disappeared around the curve of the access road before the second wave of police vehicles could block the exit.

Clara let out a long, shaky breath, her knees finally weakening as the adrenaline began to drain from her system. Maya caught her by the elbow, guiding her toward the front porch steps where Elena sat quietly in her wheelchair, watching the entire scene with a serene, unreadable expression.

"It's over, Mrs. Vance," Maya said gently, kneeling beside the elderly woman's chair. "Julian is in custody, and the federal audit team has secured the primary servers."

Elena reached out with a hand that was entirely steady—completely lacking the frail tremor she had faked for months—and rested it softly on Maya’s shoulder. "Thank you, Agent Lin. My husband always knew Julian’s ambition would eventually destroy him, but we hoped he would pull back before it came to this."

Clara stared at her mother in stunned silence. "You weren't just playing along, Mom. You helped set the trap."

Elena looked up at her daughter, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "To catch a fox who thinks he owns the woods, Clara, you have to let him believe he has dug the deepest burrow."

Before Clara could process the full weight of her mother’s confession, a sharp, urgent beep emanated from the encrypted tablet still resting on Maya’s lap. The screen flashed a bright crimson warning, overriding the secure green sync with a single incoming message from the federal server hub downtown.
