Chapter 8 - The Safehouse

The rain poured down in sheets, turning the alleyway behind the old dockside warehouse into a slick, muddy trench. Clara pushed the heavy metal side door open, ushering Julian and Marcus into the cavernous, dimly lit interior before slipping inside and throwing the deadbolt.
The safehouse was a stark contrast to the opulence of the Grandview Ballroom. A single overhead bulb illuminated a scarred wooden table covered in laptop screens, topographic maps, and empty coffee cups.
Julian slumped into a metal folding chair, ripping the respirator mask off his face and gasping for air. "They’re going to burn the whole city down to find us. Vance Industries has local law enforcement in their pocket."
"Let them try," Clara said coldly, tossing her wet jacket onto a nearby crate. She walked over to the desk, her fingers flying across the keyboard of an encrypted laptop. Lines of green code cascaded down the screen, reflecting in her dark, unblinking eyes. "The files are already decrypting across international news networks. By sunrise, Eleanor Vance won't just lose her fortune; she’ll be facing federal treason charges."
Marcus lowered himself heavily onto an old wooden crate, clutching his chest. His face was pale, glistening with a cold sweat. He looked older, smaller, stripped of the uniform and the medals that had defined his entire life.
"It won't be enough," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Eleanor isn't just a businesswoman. She holds the kill codes for the remaining assets. If she goes down, she triggers the fail-safe."
Clara stopped typing. She turned slowly to face the general, her expression hard as flint. "What fail-safe?"
Julian stood up, looking between them with growing alarm. "What is he talking about, Clara? What else hasn't he told us?"
Before Marcus could answer, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the corrugated metal wall near the ceiling. It was a coded knock—three short, two long, one sharp tap.
Clara froze. She drew the hidden blade from her ankle sheath in a single, fluid motion, her eyes locking onto the high, reinforced window at the back of the warehouse.

"Someone found us," Clara whispered.
