Chapter 10 - The Iron Horse

The engine of the armored vehicle roared to life with a deep, guttural growl that shook the dust off the warehouse rafters. Clara slammed her hands onto the dashboard, switching the onboard systems to manual override as the headlights cut twin beams through the thickening fog outside.

"Get in the passenger seat, Julian!" Clara shouted over the deafening roar of the diesel engine.

Julian scrambled into the armored cabin just as the heavy metal side door of the warehouse buckled inward with a deafening crash. Sparks showered across the concrete floor as explosive charges blew the deadbolt to pieces.

Marcus didn't wait to be told. The old general hauled his frail frame into the back seat, slamming the reinforced door shut and dropping the heavy locking bar into place just as a hail of gunfire peppered the thick steel plating of the vehicle.

"Hold on!" Clara yelled, dropping the transmission into drive and slamming her foot down on the accelerator.

The heavy vehicle surged forward, smashing directly through the corrugated metal back wall of the warehouse in a storm of twisted steel and flying debris. Rain and wind rushed into the cabin as they burst out into the muddy alleyway, sending private security operatives scattering into the puddles.

A sleek black SUV belonging to Vance Industries blocked the end of the alley, its high-beams blinding them in the rain. Armed guards leaned over the hood, raising assault rifles and aiming directly at the windshield.

"Don't brake!" Julian yelled, bracing himself against the dashboard.

Clara didn't even flinch. She kept her foot flat on the floor, steering the armored truck straight toward the blockade. With a sickening crunch of metal, their vehicle plowed into the side of the SUV, sending it spinning violently into a brick wall like a discarded toy.

They roared out into the empty, rain-slicked boulevard, leaving a trail of smoking wreckage and twisted metal behind them. The city lights blurred into streaks of neon red and yellow as Clara pushed the heavy truck faster, weaving through the deserted downtown streets.

Julian exhaled a breath he felt like he’d been holding for miles, looking over at Clara’s profile illuminated by the dashboard lights. The sword tattoo on her forearm peeked out from beneath her rolled-up sleeve, stark and unyielding.

"Where are we going?" Julian asked, his voice shaking slightly despite his best efforts.

"To the source," Clara replied, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. "To the central archives of Vance Industries. It’s time to pull the plug permanently."

Marcus leaned forward from the back seat, his face grave. "You can't get in there, Clara. The main vault is protected by a biometric lock that only one person alive can open."

May you like

Clara glanced at him in the rearview mirror, a cold, knowing smile touching the corners of her mouth. "That’s why I brought you along, General."
