Chapter 5 - The Architect's Confession

General Marcus Sterling stepped out of the shadows, his military cap held loosely in his calloused hand. His face looked older in the dim subterranean light, the harsh lines around his mouth deeply etched by decades of buried secrets and sleepless nights.

"Put the file down, Julian," Marcus commanded, his voice lacking its previous authority, sounding instead like a tired old man at the end of a very long, losing war.

Julian clutched the folder tighter to his chest, his knuckles turning white. "You lied to me, Father. You lied about everything. The facility, the children, the fire—it was all a cover, wasn't it?"

Marcus didn't look at his son; his gaze remained fixed entirely on Clara. There was a strange mixture of dread and profound relief in his eyes that made Clara’s guard go up instantly.

"History isn't written by the victors, Julian," Marcus said quietly, leaning slightly on his cane. "It’s written by the survivors who have enough power to rewrite the footnotes. And we were running out of ink."

Clara stepped back, her hand dropping near her ankle where the hidden blade rested. "Save the philosophical speeches for your memoirs, General. You’re standing here alone in a basement because your empire is collapsing. The foundation funds are empty, the board is turning on Eleanor, and the Blackwood files are already uploaded to three independent news servers on a dead-man switch."

Marcus let out a slow, raspy breath that sounded almost like a laugh. "You always were the sharpest blade in the batch, subject 404. That’s why I couldn't bring myself to authorize the termination order back then."

Silence fell over the corridor, heavy and suffocating. Julian looked between his father and Clara, the betrayal washing over him in a cold wave.

"Termination order?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling with fury. "You were going to kill children?"

Before Marcus could answer, the security alarm in the hallway shrieked to life, flashing a blinding, rhythmic red light over their faces. Heavy boots thundered down the concrete stairs behind them.

"They’re here," Marcus muttered, his eyes narrowing as he looked toward the stairwell. "Eleanor didn't wait. She’s burning the whole house down."
