Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Past

The ballroom music swelled into a cheerful waltz, playing a discordant soundtrack to the psychological warfare unfolding in the corner. Eleanor Vance desperately smoothed down the front of her beige evening dress, her hands trembling despite decades of mastering public composure. General Marcus Sterling took half a step closer, his medals catching the light like tiny, accusing eyes.

"Explain yourself, girl," Marcus commanded, his voice dropping into the register he used for subordinates facing court-martial. "That ink isn't standard issue. It hasn't been used since the Blackwood facility was decommissioned twenty-five years ago."

Clara kept her breathing even, though her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She crossed her arms defensively, instinctively hiding the sword tattoo from view. The white button-down shirt felt suddenly too tight, constricting her chest.

"I don't owe you an explanation, General," Clara said, her voice dropping an octave. "Especially not to the man who left children behind when the walls came down."

Eleanor’s face lost whatever remaining color it had. She grabbed Marcus’s sleeve, her manicured nails digging through the heavy wool of his dress uniform.

"Marcus, shut her up," Eleanor pleaded, her composure fracturing entirely. "Get her out of here before someone hears. If the board finds out about Blackwood, everything we’ve built—the foundation, the contracts, the legacy—it all burns to the ground."

Clara watched them squirm with a cold, bitter satisfaction that had fueled her survival for over two decades. She knew secrets that could shatter the Sterling and Vance families into a thousand irrecoverable pieces. But as she turned to walk away into the crowd of oblivious socialites, a heavy hand clamped down on her shoulder.

"You aren't going anywhere," a cold voice whispered right behind her ear, freezing her blood.
