Chapter 6 - The Breach

The red emergency strobe lights painted the concrete corridor in bloody hues, casting long, frantic shadows against the damp walls. The heavy thud of tactical boots echoed down the stairwell, growing louder with every second.

"Move!" Clara commanded, grabbing Julian’s arm and dragging him toward a rusted maintenance door marked with yellow hazard stripes.

"That leads to the old steam tunnels," Julian said, resisting for a fraction of a second before instinct took over. "They’ve been sealed for decades."

"Not all of them," Clara snapped, kicking the rusted latch with the heel of her boot. The lock shattered with a metallic shriek, and the door swung open, revealing a dark, cavernous tunnel choked with the smell of stale air and rust.

Marcus didn't hesitate. Despite his age and the cane, the old general moved with practiced tactical precision, pushing past them into the gloom. "The perimeter guards won't follow us into the steam network without breathing apparatuses. We have five minutes before they pump tear gas down the ventilation shafts."

They plunged into the darkness, Clara leading the way with a tactical flashlight she pulled from her belt. The beam cut through swirling dust motes, illuminating towering pipes wrapped in decaying asbestos insulation. Water dripped rhythmically from overhead joints, creating a tinny soundtrack to their escape.

Julian stumbled over a loose bolt, catching himself against a freezing iron pipe. "How do you know this layout? These tunnels weren't part of the hotel blueprints."

"Because I mapped them out when I was twelve years old, hiding from your father’s medical teams," Clara called back over her shoulder, her voice steady and echoing in the damp enclosure.

Marcus walked behind them, his breathing heavy and strained. "The Blackwood facility wasn't just a research center, Julian. It was an insurance policy for a government that didn't want to admit what it was doing during the cold war. We thought we were building soldiers who couldn't feel pain, couldn't break under torture."

"You built monsters," Julian spat, shining his phone light back at his father’s strained face. "And you used orphans as the raw materials."

Marcus stopped walking. The beam of Clara’s flashlight illuminated the old man standing beneath a massive junction valve. His uniform was stained with dust, his medals dull in the poor light.

"We built a shield," Marcus said softly. "And now, that shield has come back to destroy us."

Suddenly, a loud explosion echoed from the stairwell behind them, blowing the heavy iron maintenance door off its hinges and sending a shockwave rolling down the tunnel.
