Chapter 1 - The Gala Confrontation
The crystal chandeliers of the Grandview Ballroom cast a cold, brilliant light over the sea of high-society faces, but the chill in the air had nothing to do with the air conditioning.
Eleanor Vance tightened her fingers around Clara’s wrist with a practiced, suffocating grip. Her beige evening dress rustled softly as she leaned in, her pearl earrings catching the harsh illumination of the room.
"Step out of the frame," Eleanor hissed, her voice a low, venomous whisper meant only for the younger woman.
Clara didn’t flinch. She pulled her arm back firmly, wrenching her wrist free from the older woman’s manicured fingers with a sharp, controlled motion. Her white button-down shirt and black pants marked her out as a server amid the sea of wealth, yet she stood with the posture of an apex predator.
"I’m staying right here," Clara replied, her tone dangerously calm, laced with an iron defiance that made Eleanor’s breath hitch.
Without warning, Eleanor lunged forward, grabbing Clara’s forearm and yanking the fabric of the white shirt back. The harsh material tore slightly, exposing the ink on pale skin. There it was: a detailed sword tattoo, stark and unyielding, etched permanently into the flesh. Eleanor froze, her eyes widening in absolute horror as she stared at the faded numbers inked just beneath the hilt.
"Where did you get that tattoo?" a deep, gravelly voice demanded from behind them.
General Marcus Sterling stepped into their space, his formal Air Force dress uniform heavy with medals that clinked softly as he moved. His eyes locked onto the ink with a terrifying intensity, his military posture rigid.
Clara snapped her gaze toward the General. As she looked into his hardened, decorated face, something shifted deep within her memory. Her eyes widened in sudden shock and tension, the air leaving her lungs in a sharp gasp.
May you like
"You," Clara whispered, the blood draining entirely from her face. "You’re the one who signed the transfer orders."
