Chapter 14 - Sixty Seconds to Midnight

The synthesized alarm wailed through the executive corridor like a mechanical banshee, the flashing red strobes casting frantic shadows across the walls.
"What did you do?" Julian shouted over the deafening noise, grabbing Eleanor by the shoulders as she slumped against the wall with a twisted grin.
"I didn't do anything," Eleanor laughed hysterically, blood dripping from her hand. "The system is programmed to self-destruct if anyone attempts to tamper with the Blackwood node. Fifty seconds, children. You won't make it to the stairs."
Clara ignored the panic. Her focus was absolute. She shoved Eleanor aside, dropping down in front of the central console. Her fingers flew across the keyboard with blinding speed, bypassing firewall after firewall as the countdown timer on the screen ticked relentlessly downward: 0:45… 0:44… 0:43…
"The code isn't working from the terminal," Clara said, her voice strained as sweat dripped down her temple. "The main server block is hardwired into the building's physical grid downstairs."
Marcus stepped forward, his eyes widening as he looked at the schematic diagram flashing on the screen. "The manual override switch is in the sub-basement generator room. But to flip it, someone has to physically hold the circuit breaker open while taking the full electrical surge."
Julian looked at his father in horror. "That’s a suicide mission. It’ll fry whoever touches it."
Marcus placed a heavy, calloused hand on Julian’s shoulder. His eyes were clear, steady, completely devoid of the cowardice that had defined his compromises for decades.
"I started this fire, Julian," Marcus said softly. "It’s only right that I put it out."
Before Julian could grab his arm, the old general turned and bolted down the executive corridor toward the emergency stairwell, moving with a sudden, desperate burst of adrenaline.
"Father, no!" Julian screamed, chasing after him.
Clara slammed her fist onto the enter key, freezing the global network transmission just as the countdown hit 0:12… 0:11…
On the screen, thousands of red tracking dots across the country turned from blinking alarms to steady, peaceful green. The kill switches were permanently deactivated.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the lower levels of the skyscraper, shaking the entire building on its foundations and plunging the executive floor into sudden, total darkness.
