Chapter 13 - The Fail-Safe

Eleanor Vance knelt on the polished marble floor, clutching her bleeding hand, her breathing ragged and desperate. The obsidian-paneled hallway felt like a cage closing in around her.

"You can't kill me," Eleanor hissed, looking up at Clara with a mix of fury and terror. "If my biometric signature isn't entered into the vault terminal every hour, the automated fail-safe activates. The remaining Blackwood subjects scattered across the country—the ones who still have the tracking chips embedded in their spines—will receive a terminal shock."

Julian helped his father to his feet, wincing at Eleanor’s words. "What is she talking about? Are there others?"

Clara looked down at Eleanor, her expression unreadable. She reached down, grabbing Eleanor by the collar of her dark coat and hauling her violently to her feet, dragging her toward the massive titanium vault door.

"There are always others," Clara said quietly. "And you’re going to open that vault right now, Eleanor. You’re going to deactivate the kill switches with your own hands."

Eleanor sneered, blood staining her lips. "I’d rather die."

"You’ll do both," Clara replied coldly, pressing her tactical knife against the side of Eleanor’s neck just hard enough to draw a single bead of crimson.

Marcus stepped forward, placing his trembling hand on the titanium keypad of the vault. "Let me do it, Clara. I built this system. I know the override sequence."

Clara glanced at the old general, seeing the profound weight of remorse etched into every line of his face. She nodded slowly, loosening her grip on Eleanor just enough for Marcus to step up to the terminal.

Marcus punched a long string of numbers into the keypad, followed by a biometric retinal scan. The red security lights above the vault flickered, turning from angry crimson to a steady, hopeful blue.

The heavy titanium gears inside the door groaned and shifted, the massive locks sliding open with a deep, echoing thud.

Inside the vault, rows of glowing servers hummed quietly, blinking with thousands of active data lights.

"There," Marcus whispered, pointing to a flashing red terminal on the central console. "The master deactivation node. If you enter the master code now, the chips will be neutralized globally."

Clara reached out her hand toward the keyboard, her fingers hovering inches above the keys.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights flashed violently again, and a synthesized automated voice echoed through the entire floor: WARNING. UNAUTHORIZED OVERRIDE DETECTED. INITIATING TOTAL SYSTEM PURGE IN SIXTY SECONDS.
