Chapter 12 - The Final Stand

Eleanor Vance didn't look panicked; she looked terrifyingly calm. The cold light of the hallway glinted off the diamond rings on her fingers and the barrel of the gun she held with a steady, unyielding grip.

"I wondered how long it would take you to crawl back to where you belong, subject 404," Eleanor said, her voice echoing softly down the empty corridor.

Clara stepped forward, placing herself between Eleanor and the two Sterling men. Her posture was completely relaxed, yet every muscle was coiled like a spring. "The game is over, Eleanor. The files are out. The board has abandoned you. Your empire is burning to the ground."

Eleanor let out a sharp, cold laugh that lacked any warmth. "You think a few leaked files on the internet can destroy twenty years of institutional power? I am Vance Industries. I wrote the policies that kept this country safe while bleeding dry the people who couldn't fight back."

Marcus pushed past Julian, stepping out into the open hallway to stand beside Clara. The old general looked straight into the eyes of the woman who had helped him orchestrate the horrors of Blackwood.

"Put the gun down, Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice carrying the iron authority of a commander giving a final order. "It’s over."

Eleanor’s eyes flashed with pure venom as she looked at the man who had once been her closest partner in crime. "You always were weak, Marcus. You grew a conscience in your old age, and look where it got you—standing in a hallway waiting to be executed by your own creation."

Eleanor shifted the barrel of her pistol, aiming directly at Marcus’s chest.

Julian reacted before his brain could even process the movement. He lunged forward, tackling his father out of the line of fire just as the deafening crack of gunfire shattered the silence of the executive floor.

The bullet slammed into the wood paneling behind them with a loud thud.

Clara didn't hesitate. In a blur of motion, she drew her tactical knife, throwing it with pinpoint accuracy. The blade struck the hand holding Eleanor’s pistol with a sickening crunch. Eleanor screamed in pain, dropping the weapon as it clattered loudly across the polished marble floor.

Before Eleanor could recover, Clara closed the distance between them, striking pressure points with calculated efficiency that brought the older woman crashing down to her knees.

"It’s time to pay the debt," Clara whispered, standing over Eleanor with cold, unblinking eyes.
