Chapter 9 - The Final Ledger

The rain battered the glass dome above the grand staircase, sounding like thousands of tiny fists pounding against the roof. Clara gripped the leather briefcase tightly against her chest, her eyes darting toward the arched hallway leading to the service elevator at the rear of the second floor.
"You're bluffing," Clara hissed, her voice losing its composed veneer. "The court wouldn't move that fast on a preliminary injunction without three business days of formal notice."
"They didn't need three days," a deep, authoritative voice echoed from the shadows near the library entrance.
Agent Miller stepped into the foyer, his rain-slicked coat glistening under the emergency lights, flanked by two armed federal marshals whose tactical vests bore clear federal insignia. Miller rested his hand calmly on his service holster, his eyes locked onto Clara’s frantic movements. "We received the emergency motion at noon, Ms. Vance—or whatever your actual surname happens to be today. The digital audit Elena provided bypassed standard clerk queues and went straight to the federal magistrate's private residence."
Clara took a desperate step backward toward the master suite corridor. "You have no right to enter this wing without a secondary territorial warrant!"
"Federal asset recovery supersedes local territorial boundaries when international flight risks are confirmed," Miller replied, taking two measured steps toward the stairs. "Drop the briefcase, step away from the railing, and put your hands where we can see them."
Clara didn't drop the case. Instead, she popped the metal latches, and instead of currency or flash drives, a thick stack of printed passports, foreign bearer bonds, and a heavy nickel-plated revolver tumbled out, scattering across the polished wooden steps like discarded playing cards.
Julian flinched, stepping instinctively in front of Elena as the metallic clatter of the handgun echoed through the foyer. "Clara, stop! What are you doing? It's over!"
"It's only over when I decide it is," Clara screamed, dropping to one knee and snatching the revolver off the step. Her hand shook violently as she pointed the barrel directly down at Julian’s chest. "You ruined everything! If I can't liquidate this estate, nobody will!"

Elena didn't hesitate. Ignoring Julian’s warning shout, she bolted up the left side of the staircase, moving with terrifying speed, and slammed her shoulder directly into Clara’s side just as the revolver’s hammer clicked backward.
