Chapter 2 - The Silver Key

Julian’s thumb brushed the metallic casing of the flash drive, his expression devoid of the warmth Elena had spent ten years trying to earn. The heavy silence in the grand hallway stretched taut, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock near the library entrance. Clara slumped slightly against the mahogany banister, the red satin of her dress rustling sharply against the wood.
"You were looking for this, Elena?" Julian asked, his voice chillingly calm as he held the drive up to the dimming afternoon light filtering through the stained-glass transom above the front door.
Elena swallowed hard, her throat burning. The white button-up shirt felt constricting, the black collar pressing against her pulse point. "Julian, please. Don’t let her blind you. That drive contains the transactional records from the offshore accounts. She’s the one who transferred the endowment funds out of the foundation. I only found out because I was reconciling the quarterly audit logs."
Clara pushed herself off the banister, her composure miraculously returning as she smoothed down her red dress. "Julian, you promised you wouldn't listen to her paranoid delusions anymore. She’s been unstable ever since the downsizing. She feels threatened because she’s just an administrator, and I’m your wife."
"Wife on paper only," Elena shot back, her tone sharp as broken glass. "And only because you forged the proxy signatures while Julian was recovering in Zurich."
Julian stepped closer, his dark suit brushing against the banister. He didn't look at Clara; his gaze remained locked on Elena’s dark, furious eyes. "If this drive contains what you say it does, Elena, then your negligence in auditing it makes you an accomplice. Why didn't you bring this to the board last week instead of sneaking around my private study at midnight?"
May you like
Elena’s breath hitched in her chest. She opened her mouth to explain about the anonymous threats and the tampered security cameras, but the words died on her lips when Clara suddenly reached out and snatched the flash drive directly from Julian’s hand.
