Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Library

The mahogany walls of the manor’s private library absorbed the meager light of a single desk lamp, casting long, skeletal shadows across the rows of leather-bound first editions. Elena stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, her hands clasped tightly behind her back to hide their persistent trembling. The white uniform shirt felt damp against her shoulder blades, a physical reminder of the panic that had nearly consumed her in the hallway.

Julian sat behind the massive oak desk, the silver flash drive plugged securely into the side port of his secure laptop. The screen cast a pale, bluish glow over his sharp cheekbones and tightly pressed lips. Clara sat on the leather Chesterfield sofa across the room, her arms crossed tightly over the red satin bodice, staring fixedly at the Persian rug as if willing the floor to swallow her whole.

"The logs match," Julian said without looking up. His voice was frighteningly devoid of inflection, the sound of a man whose world was systematically collapsing and who had decided to feel nothing at all. "Every single transfer. Routed through three shell corporations registered in the Caymans. The final destination points to an account under your maiden name, Clara."

Clara didn't flinch. She slowly lifted her chin, a cold, bitter smile touching the corners of her painted lips. "And who do you think approved the corporate restructuring that allowed those shell companies to operate without board oversight, Julian? You did. In July. Right after our honeymoon."

Elena stepped out from the shadows of the bookshelf, her expression hardening. "He signed those papers based on falsified compliance reports that Clara prepared during his convalescence. I have the digital metadata proving she accessed his terminal using his administrative override code while he was heavily medicated."

Julian closed the laptop lid with a soft, definitive click that sounded like a hammer falling in a courtroom. He stood up slowly, towering over both women. "Elena, pack your desk. You’re suspended pending an internal review."

Elena recoiled as if she had been physically struck. "Suspended? After I hand you the proof that she’s destroying everything?"

May you like

"You broke protocol by entering my private wing after hours," Julian said coldly, turning his back to look out the dark window. "And as for Clara..." He paused, his shoulders stiffening. "...she’s already transferred the title of this entire estate to an unknown offshore trust ten minutes ago."
