Chapter 14 - The Voice from the Wall

The raspy voice echoed off the metal shelving units, sounding old, brittle, and chillingly familiar. Julian stepped toward the speaker grille, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white in the dim green light.

"Marcus," Julian called out, his voice sharp and resonant against the cold walls. "Show yourself. The federal marshals are downstairs. They already have Clara in custody; you can't run anymore."

A dry, wheezing chuckle hissed through the speaker. "Clara was merely a distraction, Julian. A disposable asset to keep you occupied while the real transition was put into motion. Did you honestly believe a girl from the streets of Boston could engineer an international corporate shell system without institutional backing?"

Elena stepped up beside Julian, speaking directly into the grille. "You used the charity trust as a front to launder your own personal debts from the European markets, Marcus. The federal indictments were signed this morning. There’s no offshore account left that isn't already frozen by the Treasury."

A brief pause hung in the freezing air of the archive room before Marcus spoke again, his tone shifting from amusement to cold, calculated menace. "Perhaps. But the original paper deed—the one containing the foundational signatures that prove the land belongs legally to the trust and not to Vance Holdings—is currently resting in a secure lockbox forty miles north of here. And without it, the entire corporate empire collapses into bankruptcy by sunrise, destroying every asset you’ve spent your entire life building, Julian."

Julian stared at the speaker, his chest heaving. "What do you want?"

"Simple," the voice rasped. "You and Elena walk out of this manor through the east service exit in ten minutes. You sign the voluntary relinquishment forms waiting on the hood of the car parked outside, and you walk away from Oak Ridge forever. Do that, and I burn the warrant copies. Refuse, and the archive room catches fire in five minutes."

A faint smell of acrid, chemical smoke suddenly drifted under the heavy oak door from the hallway outside.

Elena dropped to the floor, sliding her hand along the bottom crack of the door. Her fingers came away stained with dark, oily soot. "He’s not bluffing, Julian. There’s an accelerant burning in the hallway."

Julian looked down at Elena, then toward the locked door, his expression hardening into a terrifying, resolute calm. "He thinks he’s won because he still has the paper deed."

Elena pulled the small, encrypted hard drive from her wool coat pocket and held it up in the dim light. "He doesn't know that I backed up the entire registry to an independent cloud server synchronized with the Treasury at noon today. The paper deed is just paper, Julian. The truth is already federal evidence."
