Chapter 11 - Darkness in the East Wing

The sudden blackout suffocated the grand hallway in a thick, velvety blackness. Only the intermittent flashes of lightning through the dome skylight cut through the gloom, casting jagged, flickering shadows across the mahogany walls. Julian froze, his hand still suspended inches from Elena’s palm where the hard drive rested.
"Stay still," Julian whispered, his voice barely audible over the howling wind outside. "The manual circuit breakers are located in the basement service corridor. If the secondary fails, the smart locks engage automatically to prevent unauthorized entry."
Elena didn't move an inch. Her senses sharpened in the dark; she could hear the steady, rhythmic breathing of Agent Miller and the marshals descending the service elevator with their prisoner in the distance. But closer—far too close—came the distinct sound of a heavy metal door clicking shut near the private study at the far end of the east wing.
"Julian," Elena murmured, her hand closing tightly around his wrist. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Julian replied, his breath warm against her cheek in the chilling air.
"The study door. The biometric lock requires an active administrative token to open from the inside without power. But Clara’s tokens were confiscated at the precinct downtown twenty minutes ago."
A sudden flash of lightning illuminated the hallway, and for a fraction of a second, the silhouette of a tall figure wearing a dark trench coat was visible at the end of the east corridor, ducking quickly into the restricted archive room where the original paper deeds from nineteen-eighty were stored.
Julian’s hand closed over Elena’s fingers, the hard drive pressing firmly between them. "There’s someone else still in the house."
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her mind remained razor-sharp. "It’s not just an intruder, Julian. That person knew the exact layout of the legacy vault—a room that wasn't even listed on the architectural blueprints you handed over to the federal investigators."
Julian pulled a small tactical flashlight from his inner coat pocket, clicking the power button twice to activate a narrow, piercing beam of white light. The beam cut through the darkness, illuminating the rain-streaked wallpaper and the dark, empty corridor leading toward the archives.
"Stay behind me this time, Elena," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped forward into the gloom.

Elena didn't argue. She stepped in right behind him, her hand slipping into her coat pocket to grip the heavy metal stapler she had grabbed from the desk downstairs. As they approached the heavy oak door of the archive room, they noticed something terrifying: the reinforced steel lock had been cleanly bypassed from the outside using a high-frequency magnetic override device.
