Chapter 8 - Return to the Manor

The iron gates of Oak Ridge Manor stood wide open, their automated motors whining uselessly in the pouring rain as Julian’s sedan plowed up the gravel driveway. The grand house loomed against the stormy night sky like a gothic fortress, its exterior lights flickering erratically as the backup generator struggled to maintain power.

Elena killed the engine before the car had even fully settled into park. She reached into the glove compartment, pulled out a small, encrypted external hard drive she had retrieved from her locker at the Treasury annex, and slipped it into the deep pocket of her wool coat.

"Stay behind me," Julian said, killing the headlights and reaching for the door handle. "If she has the security override codes, the smart locks throughout the west wing could trap us inside."

"I’m not hiding behind you anymore, Julian," Elena snapped, pushing her door open and stepping directly into the freezing downpour. "This is about the foundation, and it's about the home she tried to destroy. I’m finishing this."

They moved as a synchronized unit up the stone steps of the front portico. The heavy oak doors weren't locked; they stood slightly ajar, a thin ribbon of yellow light spilling out onto the wet porch. Inside, the grand foyer was eerily quiet. The broken whiskey glass had been swept aside, but a faint stain still darkened the bottom step of the grand staircase where Clara had dropped her drink hours earlier.

"Clara!" Julian called out, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "It's over. The federal agents are twenty minutes behind us. There’s nowhere left to run."

A soft, mocking laugh drifted down from the upper gallery.

Elena looked up. Standing near the landing of the sweeping staircase, bathed in the eerie green glow of the emergency exit signs, was the woman they knew as Clara. But she wasn't wearing the red satin dress anymore. She wore a dark utility jumpsuit, her blonde hair tucked tightly beneath a black baseball cap, and in her right hand, she held a compact leather briefcase that clicked shut with a definitive snap.

"You really think federal jurisdiction applies out here in the private sector, Julian?" Clara asked, her voice carrying a chilling, theatrical amusement. "You built this entire estate on loopholes and unregistered land grants. I didn't steal your money, darling. I merely exercised the forfeiture clauses you were too arrogant to read when you signed the corporate charter."

Elena stepped to the foot of the stairs, her fingers curling around the hard drive in her pocket. "The forfeiture clauses require a living board of directors, Clara. And as of 4:00 PM today, the original charitable trust was reinstated by federal court order."

Clara’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of pure, unadulterated venom.
