Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

The metallic clatter of the flash drive hitting the marble floor echoed like a gunshot through the foyer. Clara stood frozen, her hand still outstretched, while Julian’s gaze dropped slowly to the small silver object resting innocently near the base of the grand staircase.

"Clara," Julian warned, a dangerous edge creeping into his typically measured baritone. "Pick it up."

Clara shook her head, her blonde hair whipping across her face. Her chest heaved beneath the crimson satin. "No. You’re believing her over me, Julian. After everything we built, after the sacrifices I made while you were building this empire, you’re letting a glorified secretary dictate the terms of our marriage?"

Elena didn't move. She kept her eyes fixed on the flash drive, her mind racing. She knew that whoever possessed the physical device held the power to alter the financial ruin waiting for them at sunrise. The foundation funds weren't just missing; they had been used to acquire the very land Oak Ridge Manor sat upon—land that belonged legally to the orphanage Elena had secretly volunteered at for five years.

"It's not just corporate theft, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice losing its aggressive edge, replaced by a devastating, hollow exhaustion. "She didn't just rob your company. She liquidated the children's trust. The building downtown is scheduled for demolition on Friday."

Julian slowly knelt, ignoring Clara’s frantic gasp, and retrieved the flash drive. He didn't pocket it; instead, he held it tightly in his fist as he rose to his full height. He looked at Clara, really looked at her, searching her face for the woman he thought he had married eighteen months ago. What he found was a stranger wearing panic like a cheap perfume.

"Open your phone, Clara," Julian commanded quietly.

Clara stepped back, her heel catching the edge of her long dress. "What? No."

"Open the secure messaging app," Julian repeated, stepping forward and blocking her only escape route toward the rear kitchens. "Right now. Or I call the federal prosecutor myself."
