Chapter 10 - The Standoff on the Landing

The impact sent both women crashing hard against the ornate mahogany banister. The wood groaned under the sudden force, splintering slightly where Clara’s elbow struck the carved post. The revolver slipped from Clara’s trembling grip, tumbling end-over-end down the flight of stairs before coming to rest harmlessly near Agent Miller’s tactical boot.

Clara gasped for air, her face pressed against the cold parquet floor of the landing, her dark utility jumpsuit tearing at the shoulder. Elena stood above her, breathing heavily, her wool coat swinging open to reveal the determined, unyielding posture of a woman who had fought through ten years of corporate suppression to reach this exact moment.

"You're finished, Clara," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of triumph, carrying only the heavy weight of absolute finality.

Agent Miller climbed the stairs two at a time, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs onto Clara’s wrists with practiced efficiency. As the metal clicked into place, Clara didn't scream or struggle; she simply went limp, her blonde hair falling across her face as the federal marshals pulled her upright and guided her toward the service elevator.

Julian remained at the bottom of the staircase, staring up at the spot where the gun had fallen. He looked shell-shocked, the last vestiges of his corporate invulnerability completely dissolved. He slowly climbed the stairs, his footsteps heavy and hesitant, until he stood beside Elena on the landing.

"Are you hurt?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes scanning Elena’s face for any sign of injury.

Elena shook her head, pulling the encrypted hard drive from her pocket and holding it out toward him. "I'm fine, Julian. But the audit isn't complete yet. There's one more file on this drive that Agent Miller hasn't opened."

Julian stared at the small black device resting in Elena's palm, his throat tightening. "What kind of file?"

"It's the original contingency agreement," Elena said, her voice dropping to a near whisper that barely carried over the sound of the rain outside. "The one your father signed forty years ago when he established the trust—the one Clara tried to burn this morning before we arrived."

Julian reached out slowly, his fingertips brushing the cold plastic of the drive. "What does it say about Oak Ridge Manor?"

Before Elena could answer, the emergency generator outside sputtered, coughed, and died, plunging the entire second-floor landing into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
