Chapter 5 - The Midnight Eviction

The storm that had threatened the Hudson Valley all afternoon finally broke with a violent crack of thunder that rattled the leaded glass windows of Oak Ridge Manor. Rain lashed against the dark panes in sheets, blurring the manicured gardens into formless smears of gray and green. Elena stood by the front entrance, her canvas duffel bag resting on the marble floor near her feet. She had changed out of her uniform shirt into a heavy wool coat, but the chill in her bones had nothing to do with the weather.

Clara stood at the top of the grand staircase, no longer crying, her red dress gleaming like fresh blood against the dark wood. She held a glass of amber whiskey, swirling it lazily as she watched Elena prepare to leave.

"You really thought you could win, didn't you, Elena?" Clara’s voice drifted down the stairwell, rich with smug satisfaction. "Ten years of loyal service, tracking receipts, organizing meetings, playing the dutiful shadow. And in the end, you’re walking out into the rain with a bag of cheap clothes while I sleep in the master suite."

Elena didn't look up immediately. She zipped her coat, pulled her dark hair out from beneath the collar, and finally raised her eyes to meet Clara's triumphant gaze. "The police aren't coming to arrest me, Clara. And they aren't coming for Julian, either."

Clara’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, the glass pausing mid-swirl. "What are you talking about?"

Before Elena could answer, the heavy oak front doors swung inward with a crash, driven by the howling wind and the weight of three men in dark raincoats bearing federal windbreakers. Leading the group was Agent Miller, a weathered man with sharp gray eyes whom Elena had known during her previous life working forensic accounting for the Treasury department.

"Julian Vance?" Agent Miller called out, stepping onto the parquet floor and flashing a warrant that gleamed silver in the foyer light. "And Clara Vance. You’re both being detained for questioning regarding international securities fraud and the illegal liquidation of protected charitable trusts."

Clara dropped her whiskey glass. It shattered against the bottom step, the amber liquid splattering across the hem of her red dress like dark stains.
