Chapter 9 - Into the Dark

Julian’s hand hovered over the master power strip for a fraction of a second before he slammed his palm downward, physically ripping the primary data cable out of the laptop port. At the same time, the deep, resonant hum of the mansion's centralized HVAC system abruptly died. Every smart-light bulb in the bright modern living room flickered once, twice, and then plunged completely into utter darkness as the entire electrical grid of the estate was cut off from the main breaker.

The sudden silence was heavy, suffocating, and absolute, broken only by the ragged breathing of the three occupants standing in the pitch-black room. Outside, the fading afternoon sunlight struggled to penetrate the tinted glass windows, casting long, eerie shadows across the marble floors.

"Did... did it work?" Linda whispered from the sofa, her voice trembling in the gloom as she fumbled blindly for the edge of the cushion.

Julian pulled a small, high-powered tactical flashlight from his tactical pouch, clicking the tailcap to project a bright, focused beam of white light against the ceiling. The beam illuminated swirling dust motes in the still air. He stared down at the screen of his laptop, which was now running entirely on its internal battery backup, displaying a frozen terminal window.

"The transfer stopped at ninety-nine point eight percent," Julian muttered, his voice tense as his eyes scanned the lines of hex code scrolling slowly across the display. "She missed the final authorization block by less than half a second."

Sarah exhaled a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders dropping an inch as the unbearable weight momentarily lifted from her chest. She stepped toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out across the manicured front lawn where the red and blue emergency lights of the police cruisers had finally begun to pull away, their work finished for the moment.

"She tried to take everything," Sarah said softly, her voice carrying a cold, dangerous edge. "She thought she could burn us out from the shadows even after being dragged away in handcuffs."

Linda stood up carefully in the dark, smoothing down the front of her blue dress with shaking hands. "Victoria has always been a cornered viper, Sarah. People like that don't just surrender when they lose a battle. They poison the well so nobody else can drink."

"Well, the well is sealed," Julian added, turning his laptop screen around so they could see the green confirmation banner glowing faintly in the dark. "The core property deed database was isolated right before the main grid went down. The house, the land, and the primary trust accounts are legally locked under your name, Mom. Unassailable."

Sarah turned away from the window, her face illuminated by the reflected white light of the laptop screen. Her expression was no longer just defensive; it was transformative. The soot from the cleaning rag had long since been wiped away, revealing a woman who had reclaimed not just her property, but her entire identity.

"We need to get the auxiliary generator running before nightfall," Sarah instructed calmly. "And then, Julian, I want a complete forensic audit of every communication device Victoria and Daniel left behind in this house. If there are other co-conspirators hidden in their corporate network, I want to know who they are before the sun rises tomorrow."

Julian nodded grimly, clicking his tactical flashlight off to conserve battery power as the emergency backup generator outside finally kicked in with a low, rhythmic thrum, restoring dim, warm illumination to the living room sconces.

"I'm on it," Julian replied, packing his gear into his bag. "I'll check the basement server room and secure any physical hardware they left behind."

As Julian headed down the dark hallway toward the basement stairs, a sudden, sharp rap echoed from the back service entrance near the kitchen—a rhythmic, hesitant knock that none of them were expecting.
