Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The new voice belonged to a young man stepping out of the dim hallway shadows, holding a thick leather-bound folio embossed with gold leaf. Julian, Sarah’s twenty-five-year-old son, carried himself with the same unyielding posture as his mother. His dark hair was neatly combed, contrasting sharply with the chaotic dust motes dancing in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the massive windows. He walked directly toward the polished glass coffee table, dropping the heavy folio onto its surface with a dull, echoing thud that made Victoria jump.
"Property transfer tax records, county assessor filings, and the original trust deed," Julian announced clearly, his voice devoid of emotion yet heavy with absolute finality. "Dated four years ago, long before Victoria ever stepped foot inside this zip code. Every square inch of timber, every pane of glass, and the land beneath your feet belongs exclusively to Sarah Vance."
Victoria lunged toward the table like a cornered animal, snatching the top document and scanning the lines of text with frantic eyes. Her breath hitched. The signatures at the bottom were crisp, legal, and undeniably authentic, bearing the seal of a notary public downtown.
"This... this is impossible!" Victoria shrieked, looking up at Daniel with naked fury. "You told me you bought this place outright! You told me Victoria Holdings owned the title free and clear! You said she was just a bitter ex-wife who signed away her rights for a payout!"
Daniel rubbed his temples, a dull throbbing pulse visible at his temple. "Victoria, lower your voice. There are legal complexities—"
"Don't you dare patronize me!" Victoria screamed, losing the last shred of her cultivated composure. Her tan silk blouse strained against her heaving chest. "You lied to me? You moved me into a house where she holds the master deed? What kind of sick game have you been playing with my life?"
Sarah stepped forward, her presence commanding the room effortlessly. She tossed the grey cleaning rag onto the floor near Victoria's polished heels.
"It's not a game, Victoria. It's an eviction," Sarah said softly. "You've spent the last three years treating this property—and everyone in it—like your personal kingdom, built on stolen land and manufactured lies. Well, the lease is up."
Linda finally lifted her tear-streaked face from her hands, stepping out from the shadows of the console table. Her voice trembled as she addressed the room.
"I tried to warn her, Daniel," Linda whispered, her eyes darting fearfully toward Victoria. "I told her Sarah was back in town, and that the title transfer was never legally dissolved. But Victoria wouldn't listen. She said her connections in the district attorney's office could crush anyone who challenged her."
Victoria whipped around, her face contorting into a mask of pure venom as she pointed a shaking finger at the older woman.

"Shut your mouth, you pathetic old parasite," Victoria hissed. "If I'm going down, I'm taking every single one of your dirty little secrets straight to the federal prosecutor's office."
