Chapter 6 - The Weight of Inheritance

Daniel remained slumped in the armchair, looking smaller and infinitely older than the confident executive who had swaggered through the front doors an hour prior. The afternoon light shifted, casting long, dramatic shadows across the designer rug that Victoria had fought so viciously to claim. Sarah did not answer immediately. She walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the red and blue flashing lights of the sheriff's cruiser illuminate the manicured front lawn as Victoria was unceremoniously loaded into the back seat.
Julian stood nearby, holding the heavy leather folio against his chest like a shield. He cast a wary, protective glance toward his mother, silently urging her not to yield to the man who had systematically destroyed their family trust over a decade ago.
"You were never a tenant, Daniel," Sarah finally spoke, her voice devoid of anger, which somehow made it infinitely more terrifying than her previous fury. "You were an administrator of a dying estate. A very well-paid, very dishonest administrator."
Daniel flinched, standing up with visible effort. His tailored suit was now rumpled beyond repair, mirroring his shattered life.
"I did what I had to do to keep the holdings afloat after the market crash in twelve," Daniel pleaded, taking a hesitant step toward her. "You disappeared, Sarah. You left me with mounting debts, a crumbling estate, and no liquidity. What was I supposed to do? Let everything we built vanish into bankruptcy court?"
"You were supposed to be honest," Sarah countered sharply, turning to face him directly. Her eyes burned with a controlled intensity. "Instead, you chose ego. You chose control. You brought women like Victoria into my home, let her bulldoze my mother's memories, and pretended I was dead so you could play master of the universe."
Linda, who had quietly remained near the console table, suddenly cleared her throat. The older woman stepped forward, her hands clasped tightly together in front of her blue dress.
"He didn't just lie about the property, Sarah," Linda said, her voice trembling slightly as she looked down at the polished floor. "He lied about the accounts. There are offshore assets. Victoria wasn't the only one draining the corporate funds to pay for high-end luxuries."
Daniel's face drained of what little color remained. He whipped around to glare at Linda, his teeth bared in sudden desperation.
"Shut your mouth, Linda! You took your cut! You signed the payroll receipts every month!" Daniel roared, losing his fragile grip on composure.
"I took my salary because I had a daughter in medical school and you threatened to fire me if I missed a single ledger entry!" Linda shouted back, her voice cracking with decades of pent-up fear and humiliation. "I'm done covering for monsters, Daniel. The ledger is open. Julian has all the backup drives."
Julian raised a small, encrypted USB flash drive between his thumb and forefinger, letting it catch the fading light.
"Every wire transfer, every shell company in the Caymans, every forged signature since the day of the initial separation," Julian stated flatly. "It's all backed up to three secure cloud servers. The federal investigators already have the decryption keys."
Daniel stared at the small piece of plastic as if it were a ticking bomb. His knees buckled slightly, and he reached out to steady himself against the back of the sofa, his breathing shallow and rapid.
"You... you ruined me," Daniel whispered, the reality of federal prison finally sinking into his consciousness.
Sarah walked slowly toward him, stopping just a foot away. She looked him straight in the eye, her expression entirely devoid of pity.
"No, Daniel," Sarah whispered, her voice cold as ice. "You built the trap. We just finally let you step inside."

Before Daniel could utter another word, heavy footsteps echoed on the front porch once again, followed by a sharp, formal knock on the open oak door.
