Chapter 12 - The Unwelcome Return

The aggressive pounding at the front double doors rattled the heavy oak frame, echoing through the sprawling mansion like thunder. Julian cursed under his breath, grabbing his tactical bag as he stepped out of the kitchen and into the dark, vaulted living room.
"Agent Miller said federal transport wouldn't arrive for at least forty minutes," Julian muttered, his eyes darting toward the front entry. "That's not federal agents out there."
Sarah walked out of the kitchen right behind him, her posture rigid and completely unfazed by the sudden escalation. She gestured for Linda and Chloe to stay back near the kitchen island out of the line of sight from the front windows.
"Look at the perimeter monitor," Sarah instructed quietly.
Julian tapped his smart-tablet, switching the camera feed to the front porch exterior. Filling the infrared screen were three men in tailored grey suits, their faces obscured by the shadows of the deep portico overhang. But it wasn't their clothes that made Julian's blood run cold; it was the heavy, leather-bound briefcases they carried and the unmistakable bulge of firearms concealed beneath their suit jackets.
"Corporate security enforcers from Victoria Holdings," Julian whispered, his jaw tightening. "They're operating on an automated protocol. If Victoria gets arrested, the primary holding company's emergency directive is to purge all physical evidence left inside the property before law enforcement can secure warrants."
"They're here to burn the house down from the inside out," Chloe added quietly as she stepped into the living room, staring at the tablet screen with horror written across her pale face. "Or at least shred every document we just pulled from my briefcase."
The pounding at the front door intensified, accompanied by the muffled, deep voice of a man shouting through the thick wood.
"Open the door! By order of Victoria Holdings legal counsel, you are trespassing on corporate-secured territory! Open up or we breach!"
Sarah did not flinch. She walked deliberately toward the heavy oak door, her footsteps calm and rhythmic against the polished marble floor.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Julian hissed, stepping forward to block her path. "Those men aren't deputies. They're mercenaries on Victoria's payroll. They won't hesitate to use force if they think they can grab those files."
"Let them try," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a register so cold and absolute that Julian instinctively stepped aside.
Sarah reached out, unbolting the heavy deadbolt with a crisp, mechanical clunk, and threw the double doors wide open. The cold night air rushed into the foyer, swirling around the three suited men standing on the porch. The lead enforcer—a massive, scarred man with cold, dead eyes—raised his hand to batter the door again, stopping mid-swing as Sarah stood framed in the warm light of the entryway.
"You're a few minutes too late, gentlemen," Sarah announced, her voice carrying an effortless authority that made the lead enforcer take an involuntary half-step back.
The enforcer glared down at her, his hand sliding subtly toward his jacket interior. "Hand over the files, lady. And nobody gets hurt."
Before he could finish his sentence, the sharp whine of approaching sirens cut through the quiet night air, followed instantly by the blinding flash of high-intensity police spotlights sweeping across the driveway. Rounding the curve of the drive were three unmarked federal SUVs, their emergency strobes reflecting blindingly off the mansion's polished glass windows.
