Chapter 8 - The Digital Breach

The casual relief that had briefly settled over the room vanished instantly at Julian's words. Sarah pulled away from her mother, her eyes narrowing as she stepped briskly across the hardwood floor toward the coffee table where Julian stood staring intently at the glowing screen of his sleek, open laptop.
"What do you mean, accessed?" Sarah demanded, leaning over his shoulder. "The firewall we installed is military-grade. Nobody outside of the federal banking task force has the decryption keys."
"That's just it," Julian replied, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with frantic speed, executing lines of code to trace the incoming handshake protocol. "It's not coming from a bank server. The ping is originating from an internal relay—hardwired directly into the mansion's smart-home security hub in the basement."
Linda gasped, pressing a trembling hand to her mouth. "The basement? But Victoria and Daniel were the only ones with administrative passcodes to the server room down there. Everyone else was locked out!"
"Not everyone," a harsh, distorted voice suddenly crackled from the surround-sound speakers mounted in the living room ceiling.
The entire room froze. The voice was metallic, filtered through an audio distortion program, but the arrogant cadence was unmistakable.
"Hello, Sarah. Hello, Julian," Victoria's voice hissed from above, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the bright modern living room. "Did you really think I'd leave my crown jewels behind without setting up a contingency plan?"
Julian slammed his enter key, trying to isolate the audio feed and override the system lockout, but the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson, displaying a single block of uneditable text: SYSTEM OVERRIDE: TRANSFER INITIATED.
"She's wiping the escrow accounts!" Julian shouted, sweat beading on his forehead as he furiously typed command lines. "She had a dead-man's switch programmed into the property deed servers. If we took physical possession without her explicit digital sign-off, the smart-home hub automatically triggers a liquidation of the primary estate trust funds to an offshore cryptocurrency wallet!"
Sarah’s eyes widened in absolute shock. The sophisticated trap wasn't just Daniel's doing; Victoria had woven a digital spiderweb deep into the infrastructure of the house itself, ensuring that even if she lost the physical property, she would burn Sarah's generational wealth to ash on her way out.
"Can you block it?" Sarah asked, her voice tight with suppressed panic as she gripped the edge of the glass table.
"I'm trying!" Julian yelled, his knuckles turning white as he hammered the keys. "The encryption is recursive. Every time I block a port, three more open up using the house's automated HVAC and electrical grid as a proxy network!"
From the ceiling speakers, Victoria's distorted laughter echoed, mocking their frantic efforts. "Enjoy your empty house, you pathetic peasants! By the time the federal agents finish booking Daniel down at the precinct, every single dollar of your family trust will be converted into untraceable Monero floating safely in the Caymans. You won't even be able to pay the electricity bill by midnight!"
Linda dropped heavily onto the edge of the sofa, her face pale and lifeless. "We're ruined. She's going to steal everything."
Sarah stared at the flashing red screen, her chest heaving with restrained fury. She took a deep breath, forcing the panic down, and looked toward the hallway leading to the basement stairs.
"Julian," Sarah said calmly, her voice cutting through the panic in the room like a razor blade. "Where is the physical kill switch for the smart-home hub?"
Julian stopped typing, looking up at his mother with wide eyes. "It's behind the main electrical breaker panel in the basement utility room. But Mom, if you pull the main breaker while the recursive script is mid-transfer, it could corrupt the core property deed database entirely. We might lose legal ownership of the house altogether."
Sarah stared at the ceiling speakers, listening to Victoria's digital laughter fade as the transfer progress bar hit ninety-five percent. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Pull the plug," Sarah commanded, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling finality.
