Chapter 7 - The Second Knock

The sharp, authoritative rapping on the oak door reverberated through the spacious living room like a gunshot. Everyone froze. Daniel dropped his hand from the sofa, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he stared toward the foyer. He knew those knocks weren't from the local sheriff's deputies who had just hauled Victoria away; those were the measured, heavy beats of federal agents executing a broader warrant.

Julian walked calmly toward the entrance, leaving the heavy leather folio on the coffee table. He swung the front door wide open without a moment's hesitation. Standing on the porch were two men in dark suits, their lapels bearing the unmistakable golden pins of federal investigators, flanked by a local uniformed officer.

"Mr. Julian Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice deep and entirely professional.

"Yes. Come in, Agent Miller," Julian replied smoothly, stepping aside to grant them entry. "Everything is ready for you."

Agent Miller and his partner stepped into the bright, modern foyer, their eyes scanning the opulent room before locking onto Daniel, who stood frozen near the designer sofa like a trapped animal. The federal investigator pulled a certified arrest warrant from his leather folder, his expression grim and unyielding.

"Daniel Sterling," Agent Miller announced, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are being detained under federal warrants for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, money laundering, and the falsification of interstate property deeds. Please place your hands behind your back."

Daniel didn't move. He stood rooted to the hardwood floor, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps as the reality of his impending imprisonment crashed down upon him. He looked desperately toward Sarah, as if decades of shared history could somehow purchase a miracle.

"Sarah... please," Daniel choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelids and tracking down his pale cheeks. "Think of our history. Think of what we built together before everything went wrong. Don't let them take me away in cuffs."

Sarah did not flinch. She crossed her arms over her olive-green shirt, her gaze steady and utterly unforgiving.

"Our history ended the day you traded my life and my mother's dignity for a sprawling estate built on forged signatures and stolen assets," Sarah said, her voice unwavering. "The only thing we built together, Daniel, was a monument to your greed. Now, you get to live inside its ruins."

Agent Miller stepped forward, grabbing Daniel firmly by both arms and spinning him around. The metallic click of handcuffs snapping into place echoed sharply through the silent room. As the agents guided a weeping, broken Daniel toward the front door, he cast one last pathetic look over his shoulder.

Linda turned away, unable to watch the man who had terrorized her workplace for years finally reap what he had sown. Julian closed the front door firmly behind the federal agents, locking it with a heavy, satisfying mechanical click that signaled the permanent end of an era.

The vast living room suddenly felt lighter, the oppressive energy of Victoria and Daniel completely purged from the space. Linda exhaled a long, shaky breath, her shoulders sagging as decades of tension finally evaporated from her frame.

"It's over," Linda whispered, wiping a stray tear from her wrinkled cheek. "They're really gone."

Sarah walked over to her mother, wrapping her arms around the older woman in a warm, fierce embrace.

"It's over, Mom," Sarah murmured softly into her hair. "We're finally home."

As they pulled back from the embrace, Julian approached the coffee table, picking up the encrypted USB drive. He paused, staring down at the glowing red power indicator light on the side of the device, which had just begun to flash irregularly.

"Mom," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he stared at the laptop screen resting beside the folio. "Someone is remotely accessing the secure server we just used to upload the financial records."
