Chapter 10 - The Visitor at the Back Door

The unexpected knocking at the back service entrance reverberated through the quiet hallway like a sudden alarm bell. Sarah froze, her hand resting on the back of the designer sofa, while Linda instinctively stepped back into the shadows of the living room archway. Julian paused halfway to the basement stairs, his hand gripping the strap of his tactical bag as he turned his head to listen intently.

"Nobody knows we're back here yet," Julian whispered, his voice low and cautious. "The police cleared the perimeter twenty minutes ago, and Victoria's associates shouldn't even know the transfer failed."

"Go check the perimeter cameras on your tablet before you open anything," Sarah instructed quietly, gesturing toward the master control pad mounted near the kitchen arch.

Julian tapped his screen twice, bringing up the live multi-feed camera grid connected to the exterior motion sensors. The infrared lenses glowed a ghostly green in the dusk, projecting images of the back porch and the gravel service path. Standing alone on the small concrete stoop was a woman in a heavy wool coat, her hood pulled low over her face to block the chilly evening wind. She wasn't holding a weapon, nor did she possess the aggressive posture of Victoria or the desperate panic of Daniel. She was shivering, hugging her arms tightly across her chest as she knocked a second time, softer now, with an unmistakable air of profound exhaustion.

"It's Chloe," Julian murmured, his eyes widening in recognition as he stared at the tablet display. "Victoria's former executive assistant. The one who resigned three weeks before the corporate audit hit."

Sarah stepped up beside him, studying the frozen video feed. "Open the door, Julian. But keep your distance."

Julian tapped the electronic release button on the smart-home pad. With a soft pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel service door clicked open an inch, letting in a gust of cold autumn air. Chloe pushed the door the rest of the way open, stepping cautiously into the brightly lit kitchen. She looked pale, her eyes bloodshot and haunted, carrying a worn leather briefcase tucked tightly under her arm like a lifeline.

"I know I shouldn't be here," Chloe said immediately, her voice trembling as she looked past Julian to meet Sarah's steady gaze. "And I know you have every reason to slam this door in my face. But I couldn't stay away any longer."

Sarah walked slowly into the kitchen, stopping a few feet away from the younger woman. She studied Chloe's face, searching for any sign of deception or lingering loyalty to Victoria's regime.

"Why are you here, Chloe?" Sarah asked evenly, her tone neither welcoming nor hostile. "You worked for Victoria Sterling for four years. You helped manage the very accounts that funded her lifestyle in this house."

Chloe flinched as if struck, her fingers tightening around the worn leather briefcase. She reached down, placing the briefcase carefully onto the stainless-steel kitchen island and flipping open the brass latches.

"Because I was never her willing accomplice," Chloe choked out, her voice breaking as she lifted the lid. Inside lay neat stacks of physical paper files, digital backup drives, and handwritten journals bearing Victoria's distinct, aggressive cursive script. "I was her prisoner. Every illegal transfer, every forced signature, every threat she made against your family—I documented all of it. I kept the paper trail she thought she destroyed."

Linda stepped forward from the living room, her eyes wide as she stared at the contents of the briefcase. "You kept records of everything? Even the offshore accounts?"

"Everything," Chloe whispered, pulling out a thick manila folder and sliding it across the metal counter toward Sarah. "Victoria thought she was untouchable. But she made one fatal mistake: she kept a physical ledger of every person she blackmailed into silence—including local judges, district attorneys, and corporate board members."

Sarah looked down at the manila folder, her fingers resting lightly on the tab. The sheer magnitude of what Chloe had just handed them was staggering; it wasn't just proof of property fraud; it was a blueprint of systemic corruption that reached far beyond the walls of this mansion.

"If I turn this over to the federal investigators," Sarah said softly, looking up into Chloe's terrified eyes, "it's going to bring down half the political elite in this state. And you were right in the middle of it. It won't be easy for you either."

Chloe nodded slowly, a bitter, exhausted smile touching the corners of her lips. "I don't care about my career anymore, Ms. Vance. I just want to sleep at night without waking up to the sound of Victoria screaming down the intercom."

Before Sarah could reply, Julian's laptop—still resting on the kitchen counter—suddenly chimed with an incoming priority alert, flashing an encrypted federal secure-line transmission request from Agent Miller.
