Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Foyer

The threat hung in the air like a foul-smelling fog, freezing everyone in place. Victoria's chest heaved as she glared at Linda, who shrank back as if physically struck. The polished mask of the wealthy, untouchable socialite had completely shattered, revealing the desperate, ruthless opportunist beneath. She wasn't just losing a house; she was losing the entire fabricated empire she had spent years projecting to the country club elite.

"Federal prosecutor?" Daniel muttered, a humorless, hollow laugh escaping his lips. "Victoria, do you have any idea what would happen if the feds started auditing Victoria Holdings? You used corporate funds to furnish this place, money that wasn't yours to spend."

"Shut up, Daniel!" Victoria snapped, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door as if calculating her odds of a clean getaway. "You brought this upon us. If you had just handled Sarah like you promised—if you had just kept her locked away in that quiet little coastal town—none of this would be happening."

Julian stepped smoothly between Victoria and his mother, his tall frame blocking any path she might try to take toward the exit. His face was a mask of cold professional detachment, belying the boiling rage underneath.

"You might want to check your phone, Ms. Sterling," Julian said calmly, gesturing toward the sleek device resting on the side table. "About three minutes ago, the corporate compliance board received a complete forensic accounting report regarding those unauthorized furniture purchases. Your accounts were frozen nationwide at twelve-fifteen sharp."

Victoria grabbed her phone with trembling fingers, unlocking the screen with a frantic swipe. The notification banners flashed red across the OLED display: Account Frozen, Securities Transfer Blocked, Audit Initiated. Color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking sickly and hollowed out. The tan silk blouse that had looked so expensive moments ago now seemed like a shroud for a career and reputation completely obliterated.

"You... you planned this," Victoria whispered, her voice dropping to a hoarse rasp as she looked from Julian to Sarah. "You staged the whole thing. You let me move in, let me spend months renovating, let me plant my roots deep, just so you could pull the rug out when it hurt the most."

Sarah stopped pacing and turned, her expression devoid of malice, replaced by a profound, chilling exhaustion.

"No, Victoria," Sarah answered, her voice steady and resonant. "I didn't plan for you to be cruel. I didn't plan for you to treat my mother like an indentured servant, forcing her to clean floors in the home she helped build. That was all your own doing. I simply waited for the legal system to catch up with your husband's reckless greed."

Victoria’s eyes darted wildly around the room, searching for an ally, a loophole, any lifeline. Her gaze landed on Linda, who stood watching with a strange, haunting expression of quiet redemption.

"Linda," Victoria pleaded, her voice shifting into a pathetic whine. "You know things. You helped me manage the household accounts. You saw the ledgers. Tell them Daniel forged those initial transfer papers himself!"

Linda looked at Victoria for a long, agonizing moment, then slowly shook her head.

May you like

"I saw a lot of things, Victoria," Linda said softly, her voice steady for the first time all afternoon. "And the worst thing I ever saw was letting you walk through these doors."
