Chapter 9 - The Silver Drop

Arthur stared down at the small, unmarked silver flash drive resting in the palm of his hand, its metal casing reflecting the dim yellow light of the foyer overhead.
"What is that?" Elena asked, her eyes fixed on the tiny device with a sudden, intuitive dread.
"It wasn't on the mat before the officer walked up," Arthur said quietly, turning the drive over between his fingers to inspect the serial numbers laser-etched onto its side.
"You think Officer Miller left it on purpose?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper as she pulled Lily closer to her side. "Or was he never local law enforcement to begin with?"
"A real patrolman doesn't carry government-grade encrypted hardware in his standard-issue trousers," Arthur replied, walking briskly toward the small study at the end of the hallway.
He pushed the heavy oak study door open, walking straight to his minimalist walnut desk where an encrypted terminal sat humming quietly in sleep mode.
Elena followed him closely, standing just behind his chair while Lily curled up in the leather armchair by the bookshelf, exhausted from the night's terror.
Arthur sat down, wincing as his bruised ribs brushed against the armrest, and slid the silver drive into the lateral USB port on the side of the monitor.
The screen flickered instantly, bypassing the local operating system entirely and loading a secure, command-line interface with a blinking green cursor.
A single text file materialized on the screen, accompanied by an audio waveform waiting to be played.
"Don't open it, Arthur," Elena pleaded, resting her hands on his shoulders. "It could be a tracer, a bomb script, a trap to lock us out of everything."
"If Julian wanted to lock us out, he wouldn't have bothered with a physical drop," Arthur said grimly, moving the mouse cursor over the play button on the audio file.
He clicked once.
A static hiss filled the quiet study for a second before a clear, calm voice began to speak through the desktop speakers.
“Mr. Vance. If you are listening to this, it means Miller played his part correctly and you were smart enough not to hand over the real assets to Julian Vance's extraction team.”
Arthur’s eyes widened in recognition as he heard the voice on the recording.
"Marcus?" Arthur whispered aloud, staring at the waveform bouncing on the screen in utter disbelief. "That's impossible. Marcus is dead."
“I’m not dead, Arthur,” the recorded voice continued smoothly, as if anticipating his exact reaction. “At least, not legally. But to keep Julian off our backs, I had to let him think I was neutralized while I moved the core operating accounts to a secure secondary location.”
Elena leaned forward, her face pale as she listened to the dead man speaking from the machine.
“Julian isn't the head of the syndicate, Arthur,” Marcus’s voice warned, growing slightly heavier with urgency. “He’s just the cleaner. And the person he answers to has already authorized a complete sweep of your property to recover the master ledger before sunrise.”

Before Arthur could hit pause to process the revelation, the screen suddenly flashed bright red, replacing the text interface with a live satellite feed of their own house surrounded by three unmarked black SUVs pulling silently through the broken security gate.
