Chapter 13 - The Silver Beacon

The silver flash drive landed with a soft thud on the wet moss at Arthur's feet, its tiny LED indicator light blinking a steady, mocking red in the darkness.
Arthur stared down at it, the cold reality of the trap settling heavily over his shoulders.
"You knew we'd head for the drainage pipe," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a flat, defeated whisper.
"Arthur, men like Marcus are creatures of habit," Julian replied smoothly, taking another unhurried step closer while the distant helicopter circled back toward the ridge. "He used that exact drainage route during the corporate audit of ninety-eight. Did you really think he'd invent a new escape path for you?"
Elena stepped out from behind Arthur, her eyes locked onto Julian with a fierce, burning defiance that defied her physical exhaustion.
"If Marcus is alive, you're the one hunting him," Elena said sharply. "Why keep playing games with us? Just finish it."
Julian turned his gaze toward her, his expression softening into an unsettling facsimile of empathy.
"Mrs. Vance, I don't kill people unless it's strictly necessary for market stability," Julian said with chilling politeness. "And right now, your husband is sitting on thirty million dollars of unallocated syndicate capital that needs to be returned to its rightful portfolio."
"It's dirty money," Arthur spat, clenching his fists as he fought the pain in his ribs. "It belongs to the federal pension funds you looted through shell corporations."
Julian let out a quiet sigh, shaking his silver head slowly as if dealing with a stubborn child.
"Money isn't clean or dirty, Arthur. It's just energy waiting to be directed," Julian said, his tone turning colder. "And right now, that energy is pointed directly at your daughter's future. Pick up the drive."
Arthur didn't move. He kept his eyes fixed on Julian’s hands, waiting for the inevitable movement toward a concealed weapon.
"What happens if I refuse?" Arthur asked quietly.
"Then the helicopter above us stops searching for runaways and starts clearing the sector," Julian said simply, gesturing upward with a tilt of his chin. "You can't outrun a perimeter sweep in the open woods, Arthur. You know that as well as I do."
Lily whimpered, burying her face deeper into Elena’s jacket as the sound of the helicopter blades grew noticeably louder, descending closer to the tree line.
Elena looked down at the blinking red light on the flash drive, then up at Arthur, her eyes communicating a silent, agonizing surrender.
Arthur slowly bent down, his bruised ribs groaning in protest, and reached out his hand to pick up the silver drive.
As his fingers closed around the cold metal casing, the blinking red light suddenly shifted to a solid green, and a harsh, automated electronic voice began to emit from the drive itself.
“Transfer complete. Target location verified.”

Julian’s calm demeanor vanished instantly, his eyes widening in sudden shock as he reached for his satellite phone just too late.
