Chapter 7 - The Empty Threat

The two bodyguards looked at Julian in momentary confusion before executing their training with disciplined, fluid efficiency.

Without a single wasted motion, the larger man released Arthur’s collar, letting him slide back down against the kitchen cabinets.

"This isn't over, Arthur," Julian said quietly, his silver hair catching the amber hall light as he turned toward the open glass door. "The federal servers you supposedly dumped into won't protect you once my associates clear the intake logs by morning. You've bought yourself a few hours, nothing more."

"A few hours is all I need to get my family across the border," Arthur replied, struggling back to his feet with Elena’s desperate help.

Julian paused at the threshold, glancing back once more toward the little girl who was still trembling near the intercom panel.

"People like us don't cross borders, Arthur," Julian said smoothly before stepping out into the dark, minimalist living room and vanishing into the night.

The heavy glass doors slid shut automatically behind them with a muffled motorized click, sealing the room in an oppressive, ringing silence.

For a long moment, nobody moved. The only sound was Lily’s soft, sobbing breaths as she finally ran away from the hallway and buried her face in her mother’s skirt.

Elena dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around the little girl and pulling her close while tears streamed freely down her pale cheeks.

Arthur stood leaning against the marble counter, his chest heaving, staring at the spot where Julian Vance had just stood.

"Arthur," Elena said, her voice shaking violently as she looked up at him with a mixture of fury and terror. "Tell me that wasn't a bluff. Tell me Marcus really sent those files."

Arthur closed his eyes, taking a deep, ragged breath before answering his wife honestly.

"There were no files sent, Elena," Arthur whispered, the confession tasting like ash in his mouth. "Marcus died before we could write the code."

Elena let out a sharp gasp, her hands tightening protectively around Lily’s shoulders as the reality of their situation crashed down upon them with crushing weight.

"Then why did they leave?" Elena cried out, her voice cracking with hysteria. "Why did Julian just walk away?"

"Because Julian Vance doesn't panic," Arthur said, walking toward the window to watch the red taillights of an unmarked black SUV disappear down the winding driveway. "He doesn't fight when the odds are uncertain. He recalculates."

Suddenly, the wall intercom near the hallway emitted a sharp, high-pitched electronic tone that made all three of them jump.

Arthur turned around slowly, walking down the dim corridor to stand in front of the glowing blue screen of the intercom panel.

A high-definition video feed flickered to life on the small display, showing the front security gate completely smashed open, and parked right in the middle of the driveway was a local police cruiser with its emergency lights flashing silently in the dark.
