Chapter 12 - The Ravine's Edge

The deafening roar of the overhead helicopter blades churned the tall grass and brush around them into a chaotic wave of green and shadow.

Arthur pulled Elena and Lily deeper into the dense canopy of oak trees lining the ravine, pressing their backs flat against the damp earthen embankment.

"Stay low," Arthur whispered into Elena’s ear, shielding Lily’s face against his chest to protect her from the flying debris kicked up by the rotor wash.

The helicopter hovered over the drainage outlet for a tense, agonizing minute, its high-intensity white spotlight sweeping back and forth across the clearing like an accusing finger.

Elena’s breathing was ragged and shallow, her fingers gripping the fabric of Arthur’s ruined jacket so tightly her knuckles were stark white.

"They know we're out here," she whispered, tears cutting clean paths through the soot and dust smeared across her cheeks. "Arthur, we can't outrun a chopper. Where are we supposed to go?"

"We aren't running," Arthur said, his eyes scanning the dense woods ahead for the faint glow of a gravel access road he remembered from old topographical maps of the property. "We're heading toward the old ranger station on the ridge. There's a secure landline there that doesn't route through the local grid."

"A landline to who?" Elena demanded, her voice rising slightly with hysterical desperation. "Everyone we've trusted has either lied to us or tried to bury us tonight!"

"To Marcus," Arthur said with grim certainty. "If he's still alive, and if that flash drive wasn't just a trap, the ranger station is where he left his operational notes."

Before Elena could argue further, a sharp crackle of static echoed from the patch of high grass just twenty feet behind them.

Both of them froze instantly.

A tall figure stepped out from the shadows of the oak trees, silhouetted against the pale moonlight filtering through the canopy.

It wasn't a tactical operative in black gear. It was an older man wearing a heavy dark coat and a dark turtleneck, his silver hair catching the ambient light.

Julian Vance stood alone, his hands resting calmly in his coat pockets, looking down at them with an expression of profound, quiet disappointment.

"You really aren't very good at hiding, Arthur," Julian said softly, his voice carrying clearly over the distant hum of the helicopter.

Arthur slowly shifted in front of Elena and Lily, placing himself between his family and the silver-haired man.

"You're wasting your time, Julian," Arthur said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering in his chest. "The ledger is already out of your reach."

Julian took a slow, deliberate step closer, a cold smile touching his lips as he pulled something small and metallic out of his coat pocket.

May you like

"Arthur," Julian said calmly, tossing a familiar silver flash drive onto the damp grass at Arthur's feet. "You dropped your beacon."
