Chapter 1 - The Broken Kitchen

Arthur’s fingers slipped on the smooth marble edge of the kitchen counter as Elena wrenched her arm backward with sudden, desperate fury.
The sound of shattering glass from the pantry echoed sharply through the quiet room, a sharp punctuation to their escalating argument.
"You didn’t just risk our savings, Arthur! You compromised everything we’ve built over the last ten years," Elena gasped, her chest heaving as she shoved him away with both hands.
"Keep your voice down," Arthur hissed, his face tight with suppressed panic as he caught her wrists to stop another frantic push. "If you make a single sound right now, we won't have to worry about money because we won't have lives left to spend it."
"You think this is about money?" Elena cried out, her eyes flashing with a terrifying mixture of betrayal and exhaustion. "They were at Lily’s school yesterday, Arthur! They watched her playground session from across the street!"
"I know what I did, and I am fixing it tonight," Arthur whispered fiercely, leaning in close so his voice wouldn't carry past the tiled kitchen threshold.
Near the hallway entrance, five-year-old Lily stood frozen in her pink cotton pyjamas, her small hands pressed tightly over her mouth to muffle a sob of pure terror.
Her wide, unblinking eyes darted between her parents before she turned abruptly and bolted down the dark corridor toward the wall intercom.
Arthur watched her go, his stomach dropping into a sickening void as he realized the front gate security had just been overridden.
The heavy glass door at the far end of the living room slid open with a slow, mechanical groan, letting in a sharp gust of cold autumn air.
Stepping out of the darkness and into the minimalist living room came Julian Vance, his silver hair catching the dim overhead track lighting.
Flanked by two silent, broad-shouldered bodyguards in heavy black suits and dark sunglasses, Julian walked with the unhurried grace of a man who owned the very ground he stepped on.
Arthur let go of Elena’s wrists, standing tall and motionless as the older man approached the kitchen threshold.
Julian stopped just three feet away, his expression completely unreadable as he looked past Arthur straight at the trembling little girl by the intercom panel.

"You left the back door unlocked, Arthur," Julian said softly, his voice carrying an eerie, quiet warmth that chilled the room to the bone. "And now, it’s time to pay the interest."
