Chapter 15 - Dawn Over the Oak

The first pale rays of morning sunlight broke gently across the rolling hills, casting a warm, golden glow over the quiet suburban neighborhood and the distant silhouette of the oak trees.
Inside the modern kitchen, the broken glass from the pantry had been swept away, leaving the marble counters gleaming clean and undisturbed under the morning track lighting.
Arthur stood by the heavy glass door, wearing a fresh white shirt and a tailored grey suit, holding a steaming mug of coffee in his hand as he watched the sunrise over the manicured lawn.
The federal security detail had departed hours ago, leaving behind a quiet normalcy that felt almost surreal after the terror of the previous night.
Elena walked into the kitchen from the hallway, her long brown hair brushed neatly, wearing a simple white blouse and a dark skirt.
She stopped beside Arthur, resting her hand gently against his arm and leaning her head against his shoulder for a quiet, grounding moment.
"The federal prosecutor called an hour ago," Elena said softly, her voice carrying a deep, lingering peace. "Marcus is safe. He's entering a protective custody program out of state, but he wanted us to know... he's sorry for dragging us into it."
"He did what he had to do," Arthur replied, taking a sip of his coffee and looking down at his wedding ring. "We all did."
From down the hallway, the sound of tiny footsteps pattered softly against the hardwood floor.
Lily walked into the kitchen wearing her pink pyjamas, rubbing her eyes sleepily with one hand while holding her favorite stuffed rabbit in the other.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Elena said, kneeling down immediately to scoop the little girl up into a warm, fierce embrace.
"Are the bad men gone, Mommy?" Lily asked, her small voice filled with a heartbreaking, innocent vulnerability.
"They're gone, baby," Arthur answered, walking over to join them and wrapping both arms around his family in a tight, unbreakable circle. "Everything is going to be okay now. We're home."
May you like
Lily smiled, burying her face in her father's shoulder as the warm morning light filled the kitchen, washing away every shadow of the night before.
Arthur looked out through the heavy glass door toward the horizon, knowing the road ahead would require rebuilding their lives from the ground up, but for the first time in years, the future felt entirely their own.
