Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Hallway

Lily pressed her back so hard against the drywall that she seemed almost desperate to melt straight through it.

Julian knelt down slowly until he was at eye level with the five-year-old, his silver hair catching the pale amber glow of the hallway sconce.

"You must be Lily," Julian said gently, his voice softening into a terrifyingly paternal cadence that made Elena scream out in anguish.

"Don't touch her!" Elena yelled, trying to rush past the second bodyguard, who blocked her path with a single, immovable forearm across her collarbone.

Arthur pushed himself up from the kitchen floor, his suit jacket torn at the shoulder, his breathing ragged and shallow.

"Leave her alone, Julian! She doesn't know anything about the files or the transfers!" Arthur shouted, taking a staggered step toward the hallway.

Julian didn't turn around; he kept his eyes locked on the little girl, who was now biting her lower lip hard enough to draw a tiny drop of blood.

"I know children are innocent, Arthur," Julian murmured, reaching out a hand with manicured fingernails to lightly brush a stray strand of brown hair from Lily’s forehead. "Which is why it's such a tragedy when parents trade their futures away for a house they can't afford to keep."

Lily flinched at his touch, closing her eyes tightly as a single tear escaped down her cheek.

"Daddy..." she whispered, the small word cutting through the tense air like a razor blade.

Arthur stopped moving, the fight draining out of him as he looked at his daughter’s pale, terrified face.

He knew Julian wasn't bluffing; the men standing in his living room were professionals who left no loose ends and answered to no local law.

"I'll give you what you want," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a hollow, defeated monotone. "The encryption keys, the offshore accounts, everything. Just let her go to her mother."

Julian stood up slowly, brushing a speck of dust off his dark turtleneck with agonizing deliberation.

"The keys are only half the equation, Arthur," Julian said, turning to face him with a cold, piercing stare. "The physical drive is hidden somewhere in this house, and you have exactly ten minutes to hand it to me before my associate makes a phone call that activates every dormant asset we have in this city."
