Chapter 8 - The Uniformed Arrival

The red and blue emergency lights of the police cruiser cast erratic, rhythmic flashes of crimson and azure across the dark hallway walls.

Arthur stared at the intercom screen, his mind racing to calculate the new variables while his ribs throbbed with every shallow breath he took.

"Who is that?" Elena asked, walking slowly down the hallway with Lily still clinging tightly to her hand, her eyes wide with fresh panic.

"Local patrol," Arthur murmured, squinting at the small camera feed. "Officer Miller, I think. He lives two blocks down."

Before Arthur could reach for the intercom release button, the front doorbell rang twice, sharp and demanding in the quiet night air.

"Arthur, should we answer it?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she looked toward the heavy oak front door at the end of the hall. "What if it's not the police? What if Julian sent them back?"

"If Julian wanted us dead, he wouldn't use flashing lights," Arthur said, smoothing down the torn lapel of his grey suit as best as he could before walking toward the entryway.

He unlatched the heavy deadbolt with a metallic click that echoed loudly in the foyer and pulled the heavy door open a crack.

Standing on the porch was a uniformed police officer in his late forties, his badge gleaming under the porch light, holding a heavy-duty flashlight pointed downward toward the flagstones.

"Mr. Vance? Sorry to disturb you at this hour," the officer said, his voice deep and measured. "We received an automated perimeter breach alert from your security provider routed through dispatch."

Arthur forced a tight, controlled smile, keeping his body positioned in the doorway to block the officer's view of the messy kitchen behind him.

"Everything is fine, Officer Miller," Arthur said smoothly, though his breathing remained shallow from the pain in his ribs. "A stray deer tripped the motion sensors near the lower fence line. False alarm."

Officer Miller narrowed his eyes slightly, his flashlight beam shifting upward to illuminate the split skin on Arthur’s lower lip and the torn shoulder of his suit jacket.

"You look like you've had a rough night with that deer, Mr. Vance," the officer noted dryly, stepping a fraction closer to the threshold.

"I took a bad fall in the pantry while checking the breaker box," Arthur lied without missing a beat, maintaining direct eye contact to mask his internal panic. "My wife and daughter are fine. We're just heading back to bed."

Officer Miller didn't move immediately; his gaze drifted past Arthur's shoulder into the dimly lit hallway where Elena and Lily were standing.

"Ma'am, is everything alright in there?" the officer called out, raising his voice slightly to address Elena directly.

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting between Arthur and the police badge on the officer's chest.

"We're fine, Officer," Elena called back, her voice remarkably steady considering the terror clawing at her throat. "Just a minor accident in the kitchen. Thank you for checking on us."

Officer Miller let out a slow sigh, stepping back off the porch and lowering his flashlight beam.

"Alright, Mr. Vance. But if you have another trip hazard in that pantry, you might want to turn the lights on next time," the officer said with a faint nod before turning toward his cruiser.

Arthur watched him walk away down the stone path, letting out a long breath of relief as the cruiser's engine revbed and it backed out of the driveway.

He closed the heavy front door, throwing the deadbolt back into place with a definitive thud that resonated through the empty foyer.

"That was too close," Elena whispered, walking up to him and resting a trembling hand on his uninjured shoulder. "How long before Julian realizes we have nowhere left to run?"

May you like

Arthur didn't answer immediately; instead, he reached down to pick up a small, rectangular silver flash drive that had fallen out of the officer's pocket onto the front porch mat while he was talking.
