Chapter 11 - The Concrete Descent

Arthur threw himself backward into the dark maintenance shaft just as a suppressed round slammed into the walnut desktop he had occupied a second earlier.
The heavy oak bookcase swung shut automatically behind him with a dull, echoing thud, cutting off the harsh light of the study and plunging them into absolute, suffocating darkness.
"Arthur? Are you okay?" Elena’s frantic voice echoed from somewhere down the damp, narrow concrete corridor beneath them.
"I'm down," Arthur gasped, steadying Lily in his arms as she began to sob softly against his shoulder. "Keep moving toward the end of the tunnel. The storm cellar has an exit leading out to the old drainage ditch."
He could hear heavy boots slamming against the bookshelf above them, followed by muffled shouts and the sound of the oak frame being torn apart by crowbars. They had perhaps thirty seconds before the operatives figured out the mechanism of the hidden pivot.
Arthur scrambled down the steep, sloping concrete floor on his hands and knees, ignoring the sharp pain in his bruised ribs as he caught up with Elena near the base of a rusted iron ladder.
"Is this it?" Elena asked, her hands feeling along the cold rungs of the ladder in the pitch black. "Where does this come out?"
"Old stormwater drain behind the perimeter wall," Arthur panted, setting Lily down gently on the dry concrete floor and grabbing the bottom rung of the ladder. "It hasn't been used in years, but the grate at the other end should be rusted enough for us to force open."
Above them, the muffled sound of a heavy explosive charge detonated against the steel reinforcement plate of the bookcase, shaking dust and loose mortar down from the ceiling onto their heads.
"Move, Elena! Go!" Arthur urged, boosting his wife up the ladder before scooping Lily back into his arms and climbing right behind her.
The air grew damp and foul as they ascended into the narrow galvanized steel pipe of the drainage system, crawling on their hands and knees through inches of stagnant rainwater.
Behind them, a bright beam of tactical flashlight illumination pierced the mouth of the tunnel they had just left, accompanied by the harsh metallic echo of boots entering the shaft.
"Faster, Elena! They're in the pipe!" Arthur shouted, his voice straining as he pushed forward through the claustrophobic darkness, his suit tearing further against the jagged rivets of the corrugated metal.
They rounded a sharp bend in the pipe just as a burst of automatic gunfire pinged off the metal walls behind them, sending sparks flying through the dark tunnel.
Elena reached the end of the pipe first, throwing her whole weight against the rusted iron drainage grate until it gave way with a violent screech, tumbling outward into the cool, damp night air.

They spilled out of the pipe together into the overgrown brush of the ravine just as a dark, unmarked helicopter rose silently above the tree line behind their house, its massive spotlight sweeping the open fields in search of fleeing targets.
