Chapter 9: The Edge of the Balcony**

The rain began to fall outside, slicking the stone tiles of the second-floor balcony. Vanessa stood near the wrought-iron railing, holding the crying baby against her chest. The wind tore through her hair, making her look unhinged against the stormy backdrop.
"Vanessa, please, look at what you’re doing!" David pleaded, taking a cautious step onto the wet balcony, his hands raised in surrender. "He’s an infant! It's freezing out here!"
"Stay back!" she screamed, stepping backward. Her heel slipped slightly on the wet marble, and Clara let out a terrified gasp.
"Daddy, don't let her drop him!" Clara cried, tears streaming down her face as she stepped out into the rain beside her father.
Vanessa looked down at Clara, her expression twisting with bitter hatred. "This is your fault. If you hadn't dug up those papers, we could have lived comfortably. You ruined everything!"
"Vanessa, it’s over," David said softly, trying to keep his voice steady despite the terror gripping his throat. "I don't care about the money. Take whatever settlement you want. Just hand me my son. Please."
Vanessa looked at David, then down at the crying child in her arms. For a brief second, doubt flickered across her features. But greed and humiliation quickly extinguished it. "No. You’ll sign over the trust first. Call your lawyers right now, or I walk out that gate with him into the night."
She moved toward the outer spiral staircase that led to the ground floor driveway. But as she took a hurried step, her slick leather sole lost traction completely on the rain-soaked stone step.

Vanessa gasped as her footing vanished beneath her. She pitched forward, the swaddled baby slipping from her grasp.
