Chapter 12: Rebuilding the Foundation**

Over the next few weeks, the mansion underwent a quiet transformation. David dismissed the cold, sterile design team Vanessa had hired and gave Clara full permission to redecorate. The heavy, intimidating minimalist furniture was replaced with warm woods, cozy rugs, and framed photographs of Eleanor, Clara, and Leo.
The old library on the second floor was completely restored. David had the drop cloths removed, revealing Eleanor’s collection of classic literature, children's storybooks, and comfortable leather armchairs. It became the family’s favorite gathering spot in the evenings.
David cut his corporate hours in half, delegating executive duties to trusted partners so he could be home every day by four o'clock. He learned how to mix baby formula, change diapers, and help Clara with her third-grade math homework. The house, once defined by echoing silences and sharp footsteps, began to fill with genuine laughter.
One afternoon, Clara found a small velvet jeweler’s box sitting on her pillow. Inside was her mother’s silver locket, completely restored. The broken clasp had been repaired, the dents smoothed out, and inside, the photograph of her mother smiled brightly once more. On the opposite side of the locket was a new photograph: Clara holding baby Leo in the sunlit garden, both of them smiling.
Clara ran into David’s study and threw her arms around his neck. "Thank you, Daddy."

David hugged her back tightly. "Your mother would be so proud of the sister and daughter you are, Clara. Never forget that."
