Chapter 4: The Housekeeper’s Secret**

Clara spent the afternoon hidden in the mansion’s lower pantry, clutching the torn photo of her mother. The only person who found her was Mrs. Gable, the elderly housekeeper who had served the family for over twenty years. Mrs. Gable sat down heavily on a wooden stool, her weathered face lined with deep sorrow.
"Oh, my sweet girl," Mrs. Gable murmured, pulling Clara into a warm, flour-dusted hug. "You shouldn't have to carry such heavy burdens."
"She wants to send me across the ocean, Mrs. Gable," Clara sniffled, her small voice muffled against the older woman's apron. "And Daddy can't stop her."
Mrs. Gable sighed, looking around cautiously before leaning in closer. "Your father is trapped, Clara. Vanessa isn't just cruel; she’s calculating. Before your mother passed, this estate was placed in a family trust. A trust meant for *you*."
Clara blinked, not fully understanding. "For me?"
"Your mother wanted you to be protected forever. But Vanessa found loopholes. If you are declared unfit or sent away, Vanessa gains full control of the estate through Leo. She doesn't hate you because of who you are, child. She hates you because you stand in her way."
The weight of the truth settled heavily in the small room. Clara wasn't just an unwanted child; she was an obstacle in an elaborate game of greed.
"Is there nothing Daddy can do?" Clara asked.
"Your father doesn't know the full truth," Mrs. Gable whispered, wiping a tear from Clara's cheek. "Your mother kept a safety deposit key in her old study. Vanessa has been looking for it for months, tearing through ledgers. If your father sees what's inside that box, Vanessa's hold over him will break."
"Where is the key?" Clara asked, her hazel eyes suddenly bright with focus.
Mrs. Gable hesitated, then reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, ornate brass key tied to a faded blue ribbon. "Your mother gave this to me the day before she went to the hospital. She told me to give it to you when you were old enough. But I think... I think you need it today."
May you like
Clara took the key, feeling its cold weight in her palm. It felt like a shield.
