Chapter 5: The Midnight Search**

The mansion was quiet as a tomb when the clock struck midnight. Clara slipped out of her bedroom, the brass key clutched tightly in her small hand. She knew she had less than twelve hours before the black car arrived to take her away.

The eastern wing of the second floor housed the old library—her mother’s favorite sanctuary, now locked and condemned by Vanessa as "wasted space." Clara approached the heavy oak door, testing the brass handle. It was locked, but Clara remembered the narrow service passage behind the hallway tapestry that Mrs. Gable used for dusting.

Squeezing her small frame through the hidden panel, Clara emerged into the dust-mote air of the library. Moonbeams sliced through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating towering bookshelves draped in white drop cloths. The room smelled of old paper, lavender, and faint memories.

Clara remembered playing beneath the large mahogany desk while her mother wrote letters. She crawled beneath the desk, running her fingers along the smooth wood underneath the central drawer. Her fingertips caught on a slight indentation—a hidden wooden latch her mother had once shown her as a secret game.

She pressed it. With a soft click, a narrow compartment slid open beneath the drawer.

Inside sat a small, fireproof steel box. Clara inserted the brass key into the lock. It turned smoothly with a satisfying click. Inside lay a stack of legal documents and a handwritten letter sealed with blue wax, addressed simply: *To David and Clara.*

Suddenly, the library door handle rattled violently.

Clara’s heart leaped into her throat. She quickly grabbed the documents, shoved them inside her oversized pajama shirt, and pushed the compartment shut.

The heavy door creaked open. In the doorway stood Vanessa, wrapped in a black silk robe, holding a silver flashlight. The beam cut through the darkness, sweeping across the draped furniture like a searchlight. Clara held her breath, shrinking into the deep shadow beneath the desk, her pulse hammering in her ears.
