Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark**

Night fell over the sprawling glass-and-steel estate, wrapping the corridors in deep blue shadows. Clara lay awake in her four-poster bed, staring at the ceiling. The velvet dress had been replaced with plain cotton pajamas, but the cold feeling on her skin hadn't faded. Every creak of the floorboards outside her door made her heart race.

Downstairs, muffled arguments filtered through the central vents. Vanessa’s sharp, piercing tones alternated with David’s low, pleading murmurs. Clara slipped out of bed, her bare feet silent on the hardwood runner. She crept toward the top of the sweeping spiral staircase, pressing her small cheek against the banister.

"It’s an exclusive boarding academy in Switzerland, David," Vanessa was saying, her voice laced with venomous calm. "They specialize in behavioral correction. It’s what she needs. Unless, of course, you want Child Protective Services asking why your daughter is wandering hallways with a newborn."

"She’s six years old, Vanessa!" David replied, his voice rising in rare defiance. "She’s grieving her mother, and she’s trying to bond with her brother. You treat her like an intruder."

"Because she *is* an intruder!" Vanessa snapped. "Everything in this house belongs to our future now. To Leo. She doesn't belong here, and if you can't see that, you're weaker than I thought."

A heavy silence followed. Clara leaned closer, a single tear tracing a path down her cheek. She didn't fully understand what Switzerland meant, but she understood the word *intruder*. She knew what it felt like when someone looked at you and saw nothing worth keeping.

Then, a new sound cut through the quiet: a tiny, choked whimper coming from the nursery down the eastern corridor.

Clara stood up. The adults were still downstairs, locked in their bitter war of words. The nursery door was slightly ajar, a soft golden light spilling across the hallway. Clara moved quickly, drawn by the fragile sound. Inside, baby Leo was squirming in his crib, his tiny face flushed red.

Clara reached through the wooden slats and gently touched his cheek. "Shh, Leo. I’m here. I won't let them take me away from you."

Leo’s tiny fingers instinctively curled around Clara’s index finger. In that quiet room, Clara made a silent promise: no matter how big or scary the world became, she would be his guardian.
