Chapter 9 - The Second Signature

The amber veranda light flickered once, casting long, dancing shadows across the yellowed pages of the historical corporate documents. Maya stared at the bottom of the second page, her vision blurring slightly before snapping back into razor-sharp focus. Her finger traced the second signature—not Julian's father, and not Victor's signature either. It was a name she recognized instantly from her own wedding certificate.

"Julian's grandfather," Maya whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "This conspiracy didn't start with Eleanor. It spans three generations of systematic corporate theft."

Victor nodded slowly, crossing his arms beneath his charcoal overcoat. "Precisely. The Vance family didn't build their fortune on innovation or market brilliance. They built it on corporate espionage, forced bankruptcies, and the calculated destruction of rising competitors like your father's firm."

Eleanor raised her head, her face stained with tears, her hair coming loose from its rigid grey updo. "We had to survive, Maya. The markets were ruthless, and if we didn't absorb your family's patents, our entire enterprise would have collapsed within months."

"So you destroyed an innocent man's life and left a child without a father to pad your profit margins?" Maya's voice didn't rise in volume, but the absolute fury vibrating beneath her words made Victor take an involuntary half-step back. "You didn't just steal from me tonight, Eleanor. You tried to finish a cycle of theft that your family started twenty-five years ago."

"And that," Victor added smoothly, "is why I am here. Julian is out of the picture, and the federal authorities are currently dismantling what's left of his personal accounts. But the holding company containing your family's original patent portfolio is still legally tied to the primary estate trust—which means whoever owns this house at sunrise legally inherits the entire intellectual property portfolio."

Maya looked up sharply from the documents. "The property title."

"Precisely," Victor smiled, a thin, predatory curve of his lips. "Julian forged your signature on the deed transfer, but he never filed the county paperwork before the federal raid tonight. Legally, as of five minutes ago, your preliminary injunction cleared the county clerk's office. You are the sole legal owner of this estate."

Before Maya could respond, the headlights of another vehicle swept across the front gates—a sleek, unmarked black van bearing the insignia of the state prosecutor’s special investigations unit.
